Why do you specifically assume that about females? I'd be less concerned by a female saying she wished she could "have an Edward", than a male saying he wished he could BE an Edward.

But either way, that's way too harsh to assume. Yes, the books (at least Twilight, I've never read 50 Shades so I'm not really in a position to talk about it) portray an abusive relationship as romantic and that's way not cool... but assuming that EVERY SINGLY PERSON who likes it has pathological issues is just stupid. Maybe they're just naive. Maybe they don't like analyzing romance novels and take it at face value. Maybe they do like it for its darkness but aren't used to discussing literature that way (since it's mostly just fandom where people openly talk about liking screwed-up relationships) and don't have the words for it, so they mimic what other fans say.

"than a male saying he wished he could BE an Edward."

Concerned, or sending them resources on how to be a responsible Dominant?

(Wait, you said Edward -- probably more applicable to someone who wanted to be Christian :-P )

Funny how rarely people bring that up.

(Not meaning this to bash you -- just saying, again, that it surprises me people go on about how, say, Christian is "not a Dom" but don't take the opportunity to talk about what one *is* -- including the desires that actually drive one.)

...Yeah, I know nothing about 50 Shades or BDSM or Christian. 'xD

This.

And honestly, while poorly executed, Twilight was never supposed to be anything more than a romance novel. So people saying "Buffy is better" are right, but they're also missing the point.

Kinda like how people say JK Rowling sucks at writing romances. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "Well, it's a good thing she wasn't writing a romance novel"
