To all the people saying "it's just romance"... you do realize that there's romance out there that doesn't involve creepy ass relationships or, if it does, it portrays said relationships as creepy and doesn't romanticize the creepy elements and behavior. It's fine if people enjoy the books, but I'm with OP - if they don't seem to realize that the relationships being romanticized are fucked up and not something you want irl, then they likely have issues.

Twilight and 50 Shades also may be romance, but they're not good romance.

Thank you. It makes me absolutely cringe to think that these books are being considered an example of romance and/or erotica because they're so mainstream, and as such, the whole genre is getting more flack than it already gets. :/

I get the feeling that a lot of the people saying this have very little experience with romance and erotica, and tend to equate all romance and erotica with OTT supermarket pulp romance novels written in the 1960s. Don't get me wrong, there is some absolute crap out there and some popular tropes that make me go "wut", but there's some good stuff, too. And most people who regularly read romance and erotica and are fans of the genre think Twilight and 50 Shades are badly written crap; if people bothered to look at reviews on sites like Smart Bitches and Dear Author, they'd see as much.

Heh. I just got back from a roadtrip where I spent the whole drive listening to the Smart Bitches/Dear Author podcasts. :)

This. I don't judge people for liking those relationships (hell, I ship some pretty messed-up pairings myself, but that's WHY I ship them), I judge them if they don't see anything wrong with those relationships.
