The need to put any sort of "I'm not gay but I'm cool with this" disclaimer in a fic has always been a fascinating thing to me. With some of the younger writers just getting into fanfiction, I find it fairly understandable. Fandom can be horribly unkind to women, and trying to write about them would certainly make any new fic writer shake in their boots. Personal disclaimers in general are often used to try and appease haters; which, unfortunately, is more likely to drive away those that are just looking to enjoy the subject matter.

I feel like there should be an actual study of "fandom psychology" or something. The stuff that goes on in fandom is so interesting.
