This is more petty and snobbish than yours, but I'm a musician who has played the violin, the trumpet, and the clarinet, and who has a brother who plays the cello and the piano.

Therefore, watching characters on TV "play" any instrument almost always throws me out of the experience because the way they're playing is so obviously wrong and there's no way they could actually produce that sound by playing their instruments that way.

On the other hand, when they do mime it successfully, it makes me inordinately happy :)

You'll like House M. D. and Nodame Cantabile if you haven't watched them yet.

My dad was the same, except about medical stuff. He was an anesthetist and when they did it 'wrong' on tv shows he'd always get pissy. But then he'd talk about the right way, which i loved to hear, so it worked out for me. :)

For me, it's tattooing on tv/in movies. My SO is a professional tattoo artist, i've worked with him and also have tattoos - when they do it wrong, it makes me grit my teeth.

I hate it when kids - particularly teenagers - on tv are getting ready for school or eating breakfast on a school day and the sun is already well up and it's light outside. When I was in highschool, myschool started at 7:30 and in the winter this meant waiting for the bus in the dark.

Yeah, us too. And my daughter now, too.

I'm this way about biology. A character holds a pipette in a completely awkward way? I start thinking about pipetting.
Genetic manipulations? There I go, thinking about things that might be slightly more feasible.
Somebody refers to a plant or animal by a completely wrong species name in a movie? I'm biting my tongue in order to not ruin the viewing experience for everyone else.

To a lesser degree, actors sounding awkward as hell in a language I know. I know I can't really expect them to be good at pronouncing all kinds of languages, but still. Even worse: script writers who get foreign languages wrong (hello, get an editor).

Yes, I guess I'm a bit of a know-it-all...

Speaking of languages, sometimes characters butcher foreign languages so badly it becomes awkward. Like when my friends ask what the character just said because he or she was speaking one of the languages I know, I've had to say "I can't really tell because it wasn't pronounced properly" more often than I'd like.

The worst parts are the friends of friends who give you sideways looks like they don't believe you.

Brendan Fraiser can't pronounce Spanish to save his life. As soon as I couldn't understand him, I automatically started reading the English subtitles... only to figure out a few seconds into it that it was supposedly Spanish. And yet I needed the subtitles to get a remote idea of what the fuck this man was supposed to be saying. Is this what magicallly perfect Spanish sounds to the director? *cringes*

Also, every language that isn't English is usually talked in short shouty barks. With lots of hand waving to emphasize. Usually employed to convey evil orders to evil minions. Just saying :)

Ooooh, while we're at it, how about mixing foreign words into a character's lines to show you they're foreign? Because obviously the character will bother to specifically mix those words in, even though there's a readily available word in English that'll work just fine. But no, if I speak Spanish, I'll invite you over to my casa and if I'm German I'll always say Auf Wiedersehen and not goodbye, and so on.

Re: Weird little things that characters do that bug you....

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ja ja ja! Plus, when people codeswitch to a language they're more familiar with, it's almost always for expressions and stuff that work better in that foreign language than in English. Like, people are more likely to say "wanna head over to my place for some ardoria?" than "wanna come to mi casa for some tomato soup?" And I don't know anyone who says auf Wiedersehen instead of goodbye unless they're talking to a German speaker or practicing their German or showing off their "foreign language skills."

Seriously, how hard is it to find a dubber to say the foreign lines instead? Since they're alreadying paying for a language coach anyway...

THIS sfm. I even mix some English in my Spanish because the expression IS originally in English and makes no sense/wouldn't be recognizable if translated! (aka whenever a meme's being quoted). There's a more natural way to mix languages other than inserting random foreign words for no purpose, but writers don't seem to be aware of this.

The Auf Wiedesehen bit is too blatant to show up in too many movies (there was a Bond one though in which the Swiss character who could speak flawless English says it instead of goodbye), but the hallo/ja/nein trio is ALWAYS there somewhere. And/or the stupid steretypical accent *seethes*

Of course I'm talking about fiction only. Hello/goodbye/yes/no are the first things you learn to say in any language. Slips of the tongue are a real thing but nowhere as common as fiction would have us believe.

Yes to all three paragraphs! Also, slip ups in grammar happen more often than saying the first words you learn in English in foreign language accidentally. Grammar is a lot more subtle though and is probably harder to write and the audience probably won't recognize it even though it is damn more believable.

This is like, one of the many instances where fiction is the opposite of real life or something. (throws hands up in air)

I do the same thing with biology.

Also I giggle at any science ever happening quickly in movies/TV anymore.

COME ON, THAT EXPERIMENT WOULD TAKE AT LEAST FOUR HOURS.

Also technicolor!science where all of the chemicals in tv laboratories have colors makes me giggle.

I feel the same way about fencing on television and in video games, since it so often happens that the "fencing" character (who is always so rich and elegant!) can neither maintain a proper stance nor do anything much other than jab at the air with their flimsy sword.
