Weird little things that characters do that bug you....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-12-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
This is *so* amazingly petty, but damn if it don't notice *every time*.

I hate, hate, hate when someone is eating in a tv show or movie and they hold their fork like a frigging ice pick. I'm thinking particularly of the Sam character in Supernatural in 'Mystery Spot'. He'd gotten a steak and was stabbing with his fork in his fist and sawing away....
*flails*

I KNOW! So stupid. But then watching 'Top Chef' last night and a guest judge was doing the *same thing* and all i could think was - did no one ever show you how to hold a fork?

I notice in rl, too, though, so i guess it's not a surprise, but man, it irritates me. That and characters that brush their teeth and then don't rinse their mouth *or* their tooth brush. WTH.

I actually find that (the way of using a knife and fork, not the toothbrushing thing) very endearing. In part because I had a very close friend in college who ate that way, but also on its own terms - I don't know, there's just something charming about it. I don't know, maybe it kind of indicates something being unpretentious and honest and straightforward, maybe I just think it looks cool. Not sure why. But I do generally like it when a character does that.

I just hate it because it looks so clumsy and awkward. I was over the moon when 'Dean' did it *right*, eating pizza with Death.
:)

What, and you don't find clumsy and awkward a little endearing?

Nah, it's all good, though.

This is more petty and snobbish than yours, but I'm a musician who has played the violin, the trumpet, and the clarinet, and who has a brother who plays the cello and the piano.

Therefore, watching characters on TV "play" any instrument almost always throws me out of the experience because the way they're playing is so obviously wrong and there's no way they could actually produce that sound by playing their instruments that way.

On the other hand, when they do mime it successfully, it makes me inordinately happy :)

You'll like House M. D. and Nodame Cantabile if you haven't watched them yet.

My dad was the same, except about medical stuff. He was an anesthetist and when they did it 'wrong' on tv shows he'd always get pissy. But then he'd talk about the right way, which i loved to hear, so it worked out for me. :)

For me, it's tattooing on tv/in movies. My SO is a professional tattoo artist, i've worked with him and also have tattoos - when they do it wrong, it makes me grit my teeth.

I hate it when kids - particularly teenagers - on tv are getting ready for school or eating breakfast on a school day and the sun is already well up and it's light outside. When I was in highschool, myschool started at 7:30 and in the winter this meant waiting for the bus in the dark.

I'm this way about biology. A character holds a pipette in a completely awkward way? I start thinking about pipetting.
Genetic manipulations? There I go, thinking about things that might be slightly more feasible.
Somebody refers to a plant or animal by a completely wrong species name in a movie? I'm biting my tongue in order to not ruin the viewing experience for everyone else.

To a lesser degree, actors sounding awkward as hell in a language I know. I know I can't really expect them to be good at pronouncing all kinds of languages, but still. Even worse: script writers who get foreign languages wrong (hello, get an editor).

Yes, I guess I'm a bit of a know-it-all...

I feel the same way about fencing on television and in video games, since it so often happens that the "fencing" character (who is always so rich and elegant!) can neither maintain a proper stance nor do anything much other than jab at the air with their flimsy sword.

And to reply to myself! I also hate it when a family sits down to eat a meal and the 'parents' tell the kids to 'go get ready for bed' or whatever when the kid has clearly only eaten about a bite of food. Stop starving your fictitious tv children!!

I hate when people don't say "hello" at the start of phone calls or "goodbye" at the end. Or, y'know, anything else. I mean at the start of phone calls, shows are usually pretty good about, but people have a tendency to just hang up when they're done with the pertinent plot information and that's just weird to me; it's like a seconds worth of dialogue, I don't think it would slow down the pace otherwise.

It *is* very weird. I never don't say goodbye.

That always bugs me. I can kind of understand not saying hello when you have a cell or caller ID and the person calling is someone you know and the two of you are in the habit of just getting to the point, but who doesn't say goodbye?

[personal profile] perfidiousfate 2012-12-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, when I say goodbye on the phone it's really awkward - I don't want to sound like I want them to leave, so I slow myself down, and say goodbye a couple of times. And I also wait in case they have anything else to say, so there's this tiny awkward pause between my first and second goodbye.

In short, if my life is ever made into a TV show, I'd prefer them not to show me saying goodbye. ;)

When TV characters take a ludicrously long time to answer a ringing phone while they scrabble for the handset, or wake up, or whatever establishing action they have going on. Sometimes you'll get up to ten rings. That shit has gone to voice mail or the person has hung up by now!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-12-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, yes. Or people who don't wake up until it's rung like ten times. Really? The first ring startles me awake and into heart palpitations, sheesh.

This actually requires two characters, but w/e: When people kiss and it makes this incredibly loud, wet noise. Wtf is that? I've done my share of kissing and it hardly ever makes noise, and never that loud sound it makes in movies and TV.
