Re: Dragon Age 2?
The characters are great. The character questlines are great. The romances are decent (though not as deep as DA:O's imo). The main plot is average. The fighting system is flashier, less realistic, and "faster-paced" (though not really) than in DA:O.
The dungeons are horrifically repetitive. (The game seriously has about five tiny maps that are reused for every single dungeon. Its a 30 hour game. You do the math. I recently replayed DA2 and went through the same fucking cave ten times in a row for ten different quests.) The world is incredibly flat and lifeless compared to DA:O and DA:A, with very few NPCs and very few quests to do outside the main + companion storylines. There's only a few "main zones" in the game, Kirkwall, Sundermount, and the Wounded Coast, and you'll be going through them multiple times each as well. Some of the environments are beautiful, but the main 3 are incredibly bland. Like, DA:O was a pretty bland and generic looking game, and they've amped it up to 11 for the sequel.
If you haven't played Awakenings, Witch Hunt, Golems of Amgarrak, etc., I'd highly recommend playing those first. The DAO DLC are all fantastic (DAA is better than DAO imo) and DA2 has lots of references back to those.
Honestly, if you absolutely adore DA:O, or you're looking for a romance sim, I'd rec DA2. But I've played dozens of rpgs over the years, and were it not for the characters saving the game DA2 would be the worst game I've ever played. As it is, its probably still the worst I've played but I've played it a few times anyway because I like the companions.
