Dragon Age 2?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm playing Dragon Age right now and I'm really surprised by how much I enjoy it. I've been thinking about picking up the sequel when I get done with Dragon Age, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews. Do you think Dragon Age 2 is worth it? What do you think are its biggest flaws?

Hell yeah, it's definitely worth it! I feel like people mainly bitched because it wasn't exactly the same as the original, which I personally find to be a baffling complaint. But hey, each to their own. I personally loved it though, and have played through it more times than the original. The biggest flaw is the bugs -- one in particular -- but if you're lucky enough to have Xbox Live or whatever, then you're in the clear.

But, one important thing! You should definitely play Awakening first.

I personally loved both of the games, and I know it's not an opinion you'll hear much of, but I preferred 2.
The story is more personal, the characters felt more developed to me, and the party interactions are entertaining. The gameplay isn't much improved and the scenery is repeated far too often, but the friendship/rivalry options add a nice twist, especially with the romances. Also there is Varric, and Fenris' voice, and Isabela.
The game adds a lot to the franchise, I think, and it's always interesting to see what impact you made when you import saves.

My feelings on Dragon Age 2 are complicated. That game was a damn mess when it came out and I haven't played much of it since, so I can't comment on that aspect of it (hopefully they've fixed the romance glitches? Out of all the glitches those bothered me the most), but I do think it's a good (if repetitive) game with some interesting characters. The story can be aggravating at times, and it's vastly different from the first imo (less exploration, etc), but as long as you're open to change you'll probably be fine.

I enjoyed DA2 a lot despite its flaws. The environment assets are repeated more than in DA:O, and the structure is very different from DA:O. (I also think the level design lazier, but I'd have to replay DA:O to confirm that.) The story moves on a smaller scale and is more character-oriented than DA:O. Pick it up, but play Dragon Age Awakening in the middle; it's a lot more than just a DLC, and adds some minor background details to DA2 (and you get to play DA:A as your PC from DA:O if they survive to the end).

The movement of DA2 is much more centered around the party. In DA: O, you can kill/kick out every member of the party at one point or another with no consequence to the final defeat of the Blight (though endgame battles would certainly be harder).

In 2, the plot simply wouldn't happen without your party. They are their own people with their own lives that make choices. In this way, I actually prefer 2.

However, the game is undoubtedly rushed, and you can't have the large scale effects on the world that Origins let you have. Still, I'd say you should give it a shot.

I preferred DA2. I like nearly all the characters one way or another and I get to see more of the other races.

Also my characters voice is pretty badass.

flaws? idk, I didn't really notice any. the first thing brought to mind is the feathery bits of hair not rendering correctly, but forcing SGSSAA fixed that

I'd say this depends on what you like about DA:O. DA2 is.... deeply flawed.

The characters are great. The character questlines are great. The romances are decent (though not as deep as DA:O's imo). The main plot is average. The fighting system is flashier, less realistic, and "faster-paced" (though not really) than in DA:O.

The dungeons are horrifically repetitive. (The game seriously has about five tiny maps that are reused for every single dungeon. Its a 30 hour game. You do the math. I recently replayed DA2 and went through the same fucking cave ten times in a row for ten different quests.) The world is incredibly flat and lifeless compared to DA:O and DA:A, with very few NPCs and very few quests to do outside the main + companion storylines. There's only a few "main zones" in the game, Kirkwall, Sundermount, and the Wounded Coast, and you'll be going through them multiple times each as well. Some of the environments are beautiful, but the main 3 are incredibly bland. Like, DA:O was a pretty bland and generic looking game, and they've amped it up to 11 for the sequel.

If you haven't played Awakenings, Witch Hunt, Golems of Amgarrak, etc., I'd highly recommend playing those first. The DAO DLC are all fantastic (DAA is better than DAO imo) and DA2 has lots of references back to those.

Honestly, if you absolutely adore DA:O, or you're looking for a romance sim, I'd rec DA2. But I've played dozens of rpgs over the years, and were it not for the characters saving the game DA2 would be the worst game I've ever played. As it is, its probably still the worst I've played but I've played it a few times anyway because I like the companions.

Mechanically speaking, I found Dragon Age 2 superior. I normally play on easy mode, because I want to experience the story and don't really give a crap about the mechanical factors. In DA:O fights could take forever because I would have to micromanage every party member's every spellcast. In DA2, on easy mode at least, the AI is a lot smarter than in DA:O. Sometimes I would have to micromanage, but it wasn't every fight, every move.

Storywise, DA2 is a smaller story. This isn't a bad thing, per se. But DA:O is this epic adventure to save the world, and DA2 is... about this one character and their group of friends in this one city. A number of the mixed reviews I saw were people disappointed in the story type change; they wanted more epic adventures, and DA2 really isn't that.

I really liked both games, but in different ways. I loved DA:O for the heroic save the world storylines (and the party members! omg), and I loved DA2 for the more personal storylines and closeness you feel with your party.

It is buggy, but if you're playing the PC version, there are mods for most of the problem stuff. I actually did not run into many issues when playing through, and I've played it about 2 and a half times now.

The story is really good, particularly the romances and the rivalry/friendship system. The characters are amazing.

As said above, however, it is repetitive. Also I personally found the gameplay terrible (what do you mean I can't equip my party members or build their skill trees however I like?), but there are plenty of mods to take care of that.

Also OT, but I started playing DA2 after hearing that the engine was an updated version of the NWN engine (which I love), and ended up hating said engine so much I pretty much modded it away.
