femme_androgyne: Othello smiling (Silly)

If looking up to the evil, ambiguously gay, inexplicably British lion is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Best comment ever award.

Jeremy Irons makes evil appealing, what can I say?

That song was awesome and even though I have a lot of love/hate feelings for Scar, I can't say I don't get the appeal. Scar was a great villain.

...Nazism?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch the video. There's a line that goes something like "Stick with me, and you'll never go hungry again!"

Plus the hyenas start goose-stepping at one point.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I remembered that line, but did not make the connection, which is really strange considering the number of 20th-century-European-history courses I've taken. I guess it just seems like a... fairly obvious motivator? Hungry people are mean.

The whole Be Prepared scene has imagery from Triumph of the Will.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god why is that hilarious

Basically any allusion to despotism is about Nazis

Even stuff written before the 1930s

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Every totalitarian regime ever = NAZIS!!!!!!

The word is losing it's meaning :/

He's lost his shine for me over the years (and I never expected him to! I could've sworn when I re-watched the movie as an adult that they'd replaced him with someone else. Someone less charismatic. Except, not possible, obvs), but I used to love Scar.

None of the being a girl, being a different species, etc. is at all relevant to how you feel about a character, really. Sometimes your subconscious goes "You. I need to learn from you."

And I don't think Be Prepared actually has anything to do with Nazism. IIRC, it was all about how Scar was going to overthrow the king. The goose-stepping hyenas just associated this badness with historical badness. Disney is wont to do that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not just the goosestepping. The way they staged Be Prepared is eerily similar to bits from Triumph of the Will, as I said above.

besides the obvious Jeremy Irons factor...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably the confidence.

He has ambition, a plan, and the courage to see it through.

I mean, it was a terrible plan that nearly doomed the whole damn place to starvation, but man, the guy sure didn't do things half-heartedly.

Plus he really is very charismatic.

And his animation was particularly sleek. It's been a while since I watched the movie, but I remember noticing how he moved differently from the other lions/characters. More, ah, smoothly? Predatory?

Particularly in the "Be Prepared" scene.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Read some Nietzsche and you might understand. It might also hopefully make you disgusted with yourself.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not. Nietzsche gave us Gor, after all.

Or don't be disgusted. He's an interesting philosopher who never got along with Nazism, despite its efforts to portray him as "one of ours." (Even going so far as to tamper with his published work.)

I'd recommend his earlier stuff, like The Dawn of Day. Near the end of his life, he was in chronic pain, took some very strong medicines for it, and eventually went crazy. So that's ... not really Nietzsche at his best.

Well, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be powerful, determined and sexy, with a voice like Jeremy Irons.

Aw, I think you and my best friend would get along. She loooooves Scar. (Not like that, but she's writing backstory fanfic for him and she's not even involved in fandom. It's cute.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But the song itself has shit to do with Nazism, wtf.
