haven't seen this, but here's an observations:

evil, ass-ignorant motherfuckers don't go around being evil, ass-ignorant motherfuckers every second of the day. they take breaks to dote on their wifes, drink with friends, take care of their kids. They may even donate to charity or save a puppy once in a while when the mood strikes.

doesn't make them less of the ass-ignorant evil motherfuckers they are. just means the world isn't quite as black/white as all that and sometimes even an ass-ignorant evil motherfucker is an okay person for an hour or so.

goodness, this

being baffled that terrible people have not so terrible, human moments is... well, it is sort of a fairly inexperienced outlook in life, i guess

(dunno how to word it better)

Yeah, I was going to say something here, but then you two went and summed it up so nicely.

agreed. Humanizing is good, it makes for good characters. But humans can be evil.

You mean that real people and well-written fictional characters have multi-faceted personalities? Good points? Bad points? Inconsistencies?

Wowzers.

With today's media, especially w/ Hollywood and other Western entertainment morality is presented as very dichotomous. There are bad guys, there are good guys and sometimes, when they want to be really complex, "gritty" and edgy there'll be a smidge of moral relativity.

I'm not surprised that people get confused. Bad guys aren't only the ones to shoot people, sell drugs and hold weirdly intense grudges on their superhero literally-a-norse-god bros.

Evil, ass-ignornant motherfuckers work with you, they're you're mother, sister, girlfriend/boyfriend. They might even be your friend, someone you chose when you were too young to know any better and they weren't who there are now. They are your teachers, your police and your court. Being a evil ass-ignorant motherfucker isn't just commiting crime and making yourself a social outcast. It can creep up on you quietly, as you "do what you have to do".

A lot of people have a surprisingly hard time grasping this. I guess it's easier when the bad guys are living far away in that one neighbourhood where people get shot/high.

I love how everyone's acting like I was shocked the villains had some humanity, I was just saying I sympathized with them even though they were supposed to be heinous people

Evil people are still people. They're just also evil. and sometimes hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why do people keep talking about this crap movie? Django is a really stupid name for a slave, that alone would keep me from watching it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You act like slaves had decent names back th-

oh wait

they didn't

because they had been stripped of their heritage and identities

Because there's an awful lot in it that's worth talking about. Not least of which is Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio making pretty pretty hatelove to each other's eyeballs.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
It was the most pretty hatelove ever. Happysigh. "I'M CURIOUS WHAT MAKES YOU SO CURIOUS."

You realize it's a name, real people have/had that name (actually, many musicians), and it's a reference to a hero from old Westerns (like 30 films).

wait, you don't, because you're an ignorant asshole

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, just what I came to say.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:38 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I giggle inappropriately because I can't stop thinking of the hypnotist guy from One Piece.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
thank god it's just not me

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't this movie about a black guy killing a bunch of white people who deserve it?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he also kills a black guy who deserves it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's an examination of the moralities of vengeance, and what moral concessions are acceptable in the pursuit of revenge. At what point would Django cease to be the arbitrator of fairness and become another person asserting his power for his own ends?

Also, can we separate the cringe-worthy violence against the slaves in the movie from the cathartic revenge-violence against the slave owners?
