Considering that Sesshomaru hates all humans (except for Rin), and IIRC he never showed any inclination for caring about Kagome (except as an extension of what she could do for Rin), your analysis that Inuyasha would treat her better is pretty spot on.

Like, it always made me laugh when people would go on an on about how Sesshy would be a ~perfect ~gentleman to Kagome. I mean, really? Maybe if she was secretly a youkai, but even then, Sesshomaru has standards.

He's like Darcy from P&P (which probably explains a lot of the shipping to be fair) if Darcy's only redeeming quality was that he cared for a human child, but he still hated everyone else.

(note, I haven't read the series in a couple of years, so it's completely possible I'm missing/forgetting something.)

(And, granted, by the end of the series, I think Sesshy had become less of a human-hating assbutt, but I don't think it would ever be enough to fall in love with a human, though admittedly, that bit's just my headcanon.) /shrug

Yeah, this pairing baffled me too. It makes no sense outside of fangirls projecting into Kagome's role.

And yet it was like the most popular pairing in the fandom, or second most, or maybe tied with InuYasha/Kagome.

At least with, say, Rin, squicky as it was, he did care about her, and you could make an argument for Kagura too. Kagome, though? He was indifferent about her, at best, murderous, at worst.

Yeah, while Rin/Sesshy always creeped me out, at least in a weird/gross (IMO) way it made sense.

(Sorry to people who are fans- it just squicks me personally out. Sesshy/a mirror 5ever!)

ayrt

I could never get into it, either. I really tried; I had heard some good recommendations, but I was all like, "but, she's like his adoptive daughter D:"

Actually, I did like this one one-shot where this was explored: Jakken felt betrayed when Sesshoumaru actually made his move, because he thought they were just raising her as a child, not grooming her.

Er, um, anyway, I think this pairing, like Sess/Kag can be explained by more projecting: Rin was probably the character Sesshoumaru cared for the most (...it's very hard to tell with that guy), so the writer/reader already had some built-in affection to work with.

Yeah, that was basically my thoughts. I think the worse thing I saw was a picture of Sesshy cuddling an older!Rin, but she was wearing a kimono with the same pattern as when she was a child, and all I could think of was "...why does he want her to still like like a child?" D:

Ooh, you wouldn't happen to have a link, would you? :3

Yeah, I think you're right, but I personally still don't like it. ^^;

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, sadly I don't have a link. This was almost... seven, eight years ago?

But! I would recognize the story if I saw it again. Give me some minutes to see if I can find it!
loracarol: (Sousuke- read a book people!)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-12-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's quite a bit of time, and it's cool if you can't find it, but thank you so much for looking! ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can't find it! D:

I'll look again, but if you want some spoilers in the meantime:

I'm relatively sure it was a one-shot.

It was a fic from more or less Jaken's point of view, about different stages of Rin's life. So, Sesshoumaru makes his move, Jakken feels betrayed, there was some line where Sesshoumaru gives him a look that says "Wasn't this our intention all along"?, paraphrasing, and then more time passes by, Jakken dies (I can't remember if it was of old age, injury, sickness, or what), and the only impact it made on Sesshoumaru was that he did not have sex with Rin that day.

I guess I still remember it because it made me go so O_O "Welp then, good thing I'm not into this pairing!"

It's alright, thank you for looking! I'll keep an eye out myself, just in case. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Still nothing, although I found another darkfic I remembered. Huh.

I don't even remember if it had character labels, but so far it hasn't been under "Jaken", and I'm about a fifth of the way under "Sesshomaru" and "Rin". Phew, this fandom was huuuge.

I couldn't find it. orz

Awww too bad. :/

Thank you for looking though! I really appreciate it! ♥

still ayrt

This is a little disturbing. I just went and looked for some of my old faves, and it seems that many old fics were deleted. Did the InuYasha section fall to the purge of ff.net of a while ago? Or maybe the authors deleted their fics out of shame?

Seriously, I remember there being more pages towards the older years...

I can understand its appeal in fanon, like I can understand the appeal of UlqHime in fanon.

In canon... ehhh.

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-12-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually the P&P I grew up on, and I don't actually think that Sesshy is like Darcy at all, I was just commenting on the fact that I could see fangirls projecting Darcy onto Sesshy, and assuming that they're very alike, when they're really not.

Also, if you're going to mock me by posting pictures of Firth!Darcy, you should at least have the decency to post the right picture of him, I mean, come on.

Don't we all? :D

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sesshoumaru's arc is about NOT hating humans and instead valuing life. And he actually does grow. So, IDK. Rin definitely changed his perspective--enough for his own mother to revive her.
loracarol: (RuroKen)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-12-31 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
While that is true, I can't really see Sesshomaru at the end actually deigning to fall in love with a human being- there's a huge difference between not hating/tolerating and falling in love IMO.
