I don't ship anyone but when I sat through that movie there were so many moments where I was like, "Now kiss."

But, uh, purists don't ship?

OP might be talking about slash ships. Or any ships, idk, there was no romance in The Hobbit.

I know. I've read the book. I just... purists are people who try to control fanon as well as canon? Like, can't a purist ship something non-canon but because they recognize it as not being canon everything's fine?

I'm not actually sure. I have seen people on tumblr complain about fandom shipping characters from the book because it wasn't canon, but there don't seem to be that many. And I have no idea if they consider themselves purists or not or if some purists ship things that aren't canon. That's a good question actually.

So now we have the ultimate problem. We have to answer the question, "What is a purist?"

I don't think I can do it.

Hopefully someone else will come along and answer this question for us. I've got nothing.

Purists might ship Aragorn/Arwen, because it's canon, or write angsty fics about how damaged Celebrian was after her incident with goblins and how much Elrond misses her after she sails West... but unless it was in the books, it's a no-go, and slash is utter blasphemy.

There's also the argument about whether it's "disrespectful" to Tolkien. This gets bandied about a lot when purists argue against slash, and it gets brought up that Tolkien was a Catholic and just from reading the various books, obviously believed very strongly in the sanctity of marriage.

My biggest dispute against that is One: Tolkien's dead. He's not around to object to slash.
Two: He may have objected to fanfic as a whole, if he knew about it, so how disrespectful would even "purist" fic have been?
Three: Given what I've heard of Christopher Tolkien's issues with the movies, I feel no particular inclination to pay any respect to him, since he's tried to stop the movies from being made.

I don't think Tolkien would have objected to fic as a concept. He wrote what was basically fic himself (The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, for instance, is basically Battle of Maldon fanfic), and he did write " once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic to the level of romantic fairy-story... The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama."

He probably wouldn't have liked slash, but I don't think that necessarily makes writing slash disrespectful - and after all, he did write incest...

Unlike fandom though he wrote incest as a bad thing. Even the happiest incest pairing in his works - Túrin and Níniel - when Níniel got back her memories of being Nienor and realised the man she was married to was her brother, she committed suicide (admittedly, both the cause of her amnesia and her recovery were due to a dragon, but still, it was ill-fated).

So yeah, he wasn't above writing incest, but he would have been offended at incest fics that treat it as happy without repercussions.

I will however mention that I am an avid incest shipper anyway, so I don't care that JRRT might have been against it.)

Oh, so that's what a purist is. Those... people. The ones who can't differentiate between canon and fanon. Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up.

I would like to think there are purists who sit back, ship canon pairings and don't get into fights with fans who ship in areas they don't think are *right*, but we only hear of the noisy ones who want to argue about what's "respectful".
