Tumblr seems to have latched onto Bilbo/Thorin with a side of Fili/Kili. Personally, I ship Kili/Thorin. (Yes, the waters I'm sailing are extremely shallow.)

There's lots of Bilbo/Thorin and Fili/Kili going around (as well as other variations of Durincest), some Fili/Bilbo/Kili, Bilbo/Bofur, and Gandalf/Galadriel. Oh and Thorin/Thranduil. Other random things because people like shipping.

(I don't ship all this, just explaining what exists.)

I don't see a point in shipping out of spite (and frankly are too lazy to do such a thing; following ships I actually like take enough time and effort), but I will say that the occasional "OMG, why are you shipping Tolkien's characters?! Blasphemy!" is annoying. Still, it doesn't show up that often (at least on tumblr) so I just shrug and go about my business.

I ship Thorin/myself. Not slash, but there we have it. Also Bofur/myself.

Purists might ship Aragorn/Arwen, because it's canon, or write angsty fics about how damaged Celebrian was after her incident with goblins and how much Elrond misses her after she sails West... but unless it was in the books, it's a no-go, and slash is utter blasphemy.

There's also the argument about whether it's "disrespectful" to Tolkien. This gets bandied about a lot when purists argue against slash, and it gets brought up that Tolkien was a Catholic and just from reading the various books, obviously believed very strongly in the sanctity of marriage.

My biggest dispute against that is One: Tolkien's dead. He's not around to object to slash.
Two: He may have objected to fanfic as a whole, if he knew about it, so how disrespectful would even "purist" fic have been?
Three: Given what I've heard of Christopher Tolkien's issues with the movies, I feel no particular inclination to pay any respect to him, since he's tried to stop the movies from being made.

Speaking as a Tolkien-purist, I have to say none of these newbie dwarf-ships can hold a candle to the original dwarf-ships: Gimli/Legolas, Gimli/Galadriel, and hell, why not Gimli/Legolas/Galadriel, 'cause let's face it, our dwarf Gimli just can't get enough of that sweet elven lovin'.

I saw the whole purist crapola back when the LotR movies were coming out. I remain of the same basic mindset as I had then:

I don't give a shit what purists think is "respectful" or disrespectful". JRR Tolkien is dead and no matter what anyone says, won't roll in his grave. Also, I have little to no respect for his son who has done his damnedest to sue the pants off PJ and stop The Hobbit from being made.

All I care is my right to ship characters who I freely admit I had never considered shipping before the movie came along with them being hot and sexy.

Reactionary purists can kiss my fat butt, I don't ship to spite them, but because I just damn well like shipping.
