Maybe they overdid it, but I don't think it's all out of character. The bit about Radagast, for instance, sounded like an exaggerated version of his (book!canon) bitching about Gandalf smoking during the White Council (pity they didn't keep that, mind - that passage is a bit funny but it would have been more in keeping with the serious tone of the scene, and it ties in nicely with what Gandalf says later in the film about ordinary folks and all that).
And didn't the White Council attack Dol Guldur because Saruman was secretly keen to keep Sauron away from the Anduin so he could look for the Ring himself? So he would have been pretty far along on the way to the dark side even then? I don't know, my timline is a bit fuzzy.
