(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:11 am (UTC)(link)There are some shows/films that are enjoyable for being scary etc. rather than happy/amusing but in general, I don't like things that are just bleak.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of those for me. My friends rave about it, and agree it's a good book. I just don't see what I am supposed to gain from reading it. It didn't really teach me anything about the long depression era, and I couldn't enjoy it, so ok it's a great work of literature but why should I want to read it?
On the other hand, I love Six Feet Under, because I find it genuinely funny. The humour is really dark, but to me it's hilarious.
