Movies, books, shows, or episodes of TV shows that you think are good but hate anyway

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yesterday there was a GC comment asking for opinions on Torchwood: Children of Earth and it got me thinking about how I can hate a great story that is excellently executed and has basically no major flaws simply because it's so utterly cynical and bleak. Which reminded me of the movie "The Last Emperor", which I despise for similar reasons despite the fact that I completely understand all the reasons for why people say it's a great movie, and having no actual criticisms to make. And then I thought of the show "Six Feet Under" which I hate the same way.

Anyone else have experiences like this with certain fictional works?

Yep. For me, it's No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. I can see why it gets the acclaim. Good acting. Beautifully shot. But, God, I hate them. I find them so boring and I can't stand the characters.

I was one of the people who replied to the CoE post. I don't like it, because it's just not fun.

There are some shows/films that are enjoyable for being scary etc. rather than happy/amusing but in general, I don't like things that are just bleak.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of those for me. My friends rave about it, and agree it's a good book. I just don't see what I am supposed to gain from reading it. It didn't really teach me anything about the long depression era, and I couldn't enjoy it, so ok it's a great work of literature but why should I want to read it?

On the other hand, I love Six Feet Under, because I find it genuinely funny. The humour is really dark, but to me it's hilarious.

I cannot stand Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Like you, I understand on an intellectual level why it gets acclaim and the analogy the author was trying to make, but I just hate the plot and all the characters so much that I can't enjoy it as a story on a more emotional level. Reading that book for English Lit made me hate humanity for awhile.

First season of Mad Men nearly lost me because of this. WHAT AM I WATCHING? WHY SHOULD I CARE? EVERYTHING SUCKS, WHAT THE HELL.

I got past The Hobo Code at long last, but for a long while there...

This. I cannot watch Mad Men. It's clearly a fantastic show--great humor, great acting, great costuming, fantastic sets--but it's so bleak and everyone seems like an asshole to me. I felt bad every time I tried to watch it, so I quit.

Most of the "classics" of the required reading list for (US) high school English. I understood the lessons on them and why they're important pieces of literature, but that didn't keep them from being boring as fuck to read.

I vividly remember switching main fandoms from Mad Men to Doctor Who a couple years ago. Brilliant, flawlessly-executed, impeccably written and perfectly acted show where everyone sucks and everything is worthless and horrible to a silly, OTT, wildly inconsistent, wallbanger- and plot-hole-ridden show that makes me laugh and cry with its sheer wonder and charm? Sign me up.

Mad Men anon from above mentioning that yeah, I went the reverse direction. NOT FUN.

I enjoy both. I think both shows balance each other out, haha.

I love both "Yes [Prime] Minister" and "The Thick of It" in small doses because they're really frickin' hilarious, but too much and it starts grating on my nerves so much because it feels like...so, what's your point? Anything beyond sniggering about how much government sucks? Anything? Any hope? Any suggestions? Any contrasts? Any meaningful conflict? Any possibilities? Anything?

Ugh. This is the reason I could never stomach the new Battlestar Galactica despite the fact that there were several ideas that fascinated me. Who and what could I possibly root for in that cesspool of nihilism and dickery?

Ugh, I can relate to that very much. I kinda wish Netflix had multiple ratings options just to make the distinction between "this was very good!" and "It did its job too well and I couldn't enjoy it!"

For example, the movie Margot at the Wedding. So. Much. Awkwardness. So it achieved its purpose and I certainly was there with the characters, but ugh.

I love sad things, but they have to be sad, not bleak. Tragedy, even horrible, gut-wrenching tragedy, I will eat up with a spoon, but it has to be bad things happening to wonderful characters who I love and bad things happening for meaningful reasons and with alternative choices that could have happened instead.

For example, I cannot stand Battlestar Galactica, not because the setting and the things that happen are so horrific, but because everyone is such a selfish dickwad about it all.

Once Upon a Time.

I want to like it. I do. It's filmed near here, it's fantasy, it uses fairy tales and I know the plots are interesting and there's magic. I should like it. I know lots of people who do! But I...don't. I've tried, but I don't.

Inception. Yes, interesting idea, amazing fight scenes and 'dream' scenes, boys in suits looking hot, 'dream a little bigger, darling'..... But holy crap was it tedious. My SO and i watched and we were both going 'just wake up, already! omg, when will it eeeeeeeeeend!!!'

Hated. So much.
*but i love the fic*

"Hate" is too strong, but I wasn't very impressed with Lost in Translation. I thought it had merit, but for some reason, I found it drawn-out and had a hard time connecting with the characters. I usually go for stories like that, but not that one, apparently.

This is me with Game of Thrones. "I suppose it's good," I'll say through gritted teeth and with a twitchy eye, but you'd honestly have to pay me to crack open the book or watch the show.

Angels in America. I would rather watch Rent - it's at least two hours shorter, has female characters who matter, and at least turns its heavy-handed philosophizing into catchy musical numbers.

City of Lost Children. It's gorgeous, it's well-acted, it has great set design. The characters are all broad outlines, but it's sort of a fairy-tale so that makes sense. But, oh, my gods, I never ever want to see it again. It was creepy as hell, and it's so glacially paced that the creepy things I want not to look at are on screen for forever.

Gilliam's Brazil is one of those movies I think is amazing but scares the willies out of me.

Stopped watching Lars von Trier and Cronenberg for the same reason. They're brilliant directors but I can't watch them without flushing my brain with bleach.

"The Body" episode of Buffy, obviously. It was a beautiful, perfect, amazing episode that I fucking refuse to ever watch again because it was depressing.

Also, Breaking Bad. People keep mentioning these kind of shows that aren't bad but just everything is always terrible, and Breaking bad fits into that for me. I can't get into it because I hate all the characters (except Jesse) and everything is bad and there's no comedy relief. It's like is Always Sunny was a drama instead of a comedy and centered on meth.

I can't handle depressing shit. Sadly, my boyfriend fucking LOVES it.
