Re: Movies, books, shows, or episodes of TV shows that you think are good but hate anyway

First season of Mad Men nearly lost me because of this. WHAT AM I WATCHING? WHY SHOULD I CARE? EVERYTHING SUCKS, WHAT THE HELL.

I got past The Hobo Code at long last, but for a long while there...

This. I cannot watch Mad Men. It's clearly a fantastic show--great humor, great acting, great costuming, fantastic sets--but it's so bleak and everyone seems like an asshole to me. I felt bad every time I tried to watch it, so I quit.

Don's redemption arc is actually pretty good, but it takes until about S4 to really peak, and he's hard to watch in between then. On the other hand, if you're capable of watching Breaking Bad (which, dunno if you are, but), Mad Men is way easier, because at least people (especially children) aren't being murdered left and right.

I don't watch Breaking Bad, and now I will definitely not because I can't take kids being killed. :( Thanks for the heads-up on that.

Breaking Bad seems so much more bleak than Mad Men, which is why I am so wary of watching it even though I'd really like to. With MM I can at least enjoy the fact there's not much violence in it.

Although, actually, MM appeals to me in a lot of levels. Period dramas usually do, lol. I like the slow-simmering narrative style, and I always have Peggy Olson to root for.

The thing about Breaking Bad is that, unlike Mad Men, they are actually trying to get you to root for these people instead of just observe how terrible their lives are, and they mostly succeed because at first they're so likeable and their situation makes sense. It took a long time for me to turn against Walter White, and there's still Jesse Pinkman, who is basically the reason I stay, omg.
