I love sad things, but they have to be sad, not bleak. Tragedy, even horrible, gut-wrenching tragedy, I will eat up with a spoon, but it has to be bad things happening to wonderful characters who I love and bad things happening for meaningful reasons and with alternative choices that could have happened instead.

For example, I cannot stand Battlestar Galactica, not because the setting and the things that happen are so horrific, but because everyone is such a selfish dickwad about it all.

I agree with this a lot. I don't mind some sad things, but bleak, nihilistic media both wears me out and forces me not to care after a while.

Oh my God, yes! I wanted to like it, but, wow, I did not want to watch any of those people. Apparently, in this case, gritty reboot = how grim and bleak can we possibly make it?
