I saw "Into the Woods" on Broadway. And then later I saw it done by a local high school, and to be honest, the high school production had some elements I liked just as much, or even better, than the Broadway version. (For one thing, the high school had twin brothers as the princes, and boy could they sing.)

I've also seen plays on Broadway and then later when they'd gone on tour and liked the touring version better. There isn't anything particularly magical about one or two theater districts over all the productions everywhere else.

This!

My high school produced Les Mis when I was a junior, and I played in the pit orchestra. It's a big high school with a huge performing arts department. People always talk about how excellent the fall musical is, but that year was particularly outstanding. It was one of the best experiences I've had.

ayrt can say that obviously that's not comparable and my poor unambitious self can never comprehend the majesty of a true musical experience, but I'll call bullshit because that play was damn incredible to me. If they don't like it they can stick it where the sun doesn't shine. They might think my experiences are dull, but I'm content to settle for their version of "dull" tbqh.

(can you tell how much pretentious people irritate me lol)

I know that feel so much! I've seen Beauty and the Beast performed live twice, once by a local high school which is pm the broadway of the local high schools, lol and then again when it was touring and one of the stops was my college, but I MUCH preferred the one at the local high school. Just because they weren't paid professionals doesn't mean they're lower quality. :3

TBH, even if I ever see a professional version of Beauty and the Beast, I don't imagine I'll ever see a Lefou who will top the kid I saw in the local production. And when I say kid, I think he was eleven years old. At most. He was just that good.

The local production of Les Mis had moments as good as anything I saw on West End. It's always a treasure when you find something that good seemingly out of nowhere.

Granted I'm not comparing Broadway to community theatre, but comparing the Les Mis movie with my high school's production, there were definitely parts of even the high school production I liked better - seventeen though he was, our Javert had way more power than Russel Crowe, and our Valjean had an amazing voice, even if he did (obviously) sound much too young for the role.

I saw "Into The Woods" on Broadway and then later at my all-female college, where the male parts were, of course, all played by women. It DEFINITELY made me think about the themes in a whole new way. And some of the songs sounded better, to be perfectly honest.

I can't say I have ever seen Broadway in NYC but my folks took us to see the touring productions in the Seattle theatre, but we also saw stuff locally in the Olympia area. The local high school drama dept was awesome, and they put on productions of stuff that my folks had taken us to see in Seattle, where the high schoolers did a far better job.
