I love musicals and I saw and enjoyed this movie in the theaters and I still don't understand why people are rabid over it.

It's a wonderful movie and the music is fantastic but the way people get so emotional over it I feel like I'm missing something. (Also is this the only musical movie adaptation? The only other version I've seen was the LA non-musical one. I've listened to the soundtrack of the original broadway production several times though.)

Also holy crap there are so many unbelievably defensive people in this thread calm the fuck down jeez this is exactly what the secret was talking about.

I think some of the emotional reaction is from people who've seen it on stage and are huge fans of the stage production? It tends to be one of those plays that people get really really emotionally invested in and often a bit obsessive over, and I think that's carrying over to their reaction to the movie. I listened to the soundtrack and had read the book and was familiar with the story before I saw the play live, but I have to admit that I was a lot more attached after I had a chance to see it on stage. I haven't seen this movie yet, but I know I got ridiculously emotional when I saw the movie version of RENT for some of the same reasons. Objectively, the movie isn't the most amazing thing ever and it definitely has its flaws, but it meant a lot to me personally to see a decent movie version of one of my favorite plays. (Then again, I think part of that was also because the RENT movie involved most of the original Broadway cast, and it was kind of awesome to see them all taking up those roles again.)

I'm not sure if it would be exactly the same for everyone, but I think that's probably at least part of what's going on.
