To be honest, I don't get it either. I know a few songs, but that's all. The musical never made it big in my country and many people around me were baffled that it even existed. To us it's just the book and the non-singing films.

But, then again, I barely know the musical. Maybe if I saw it/saw the film I'd understand?

I've never seen it but I'd like to. I figure it's probably well loved for a reason. (Now that doesn't mean that everyone is going to get it, but that's the case with everything.)

This is going to be like the Phantom movie, where you see internet profiles pop up that say things like

"TOTAL Broadway theater nerd!!!!! Location: Topeka, KS"

by people who have never set foot in New York City.

No movie (or touring production - the poor man's Broadway) can ever touch what that musical was on Broadway or the West End. I won't see it because it's an inferior production, yet it's a production that the masses can access, so there you go.

Also, the previews seem to be more focused on ~hot 'n' sexy older Cosette OMG sex appeal come see the movie we have the ladiez~ so it wouldn't be of interest anyway.

Nope, I'm with you. I don't get it. I think it sounds really freaking depressing (it's even in the damn title) and I don't care about the music. I won't be seeing it and if you don't want to, then you shouldn't either.

Why not just... avoid places where people are talking about it? I mean, I didn't see The Dark Knight until the week before The Dark Knight Rises and I feel like TDK was everywhere when it first came out. I managed to survive.

Because it's a wonderful musical, I'd daresay one of the best if you look at it musically. It's also based on a pretty famous book, by a pretty famous guy. Haven't seen this adaptation yet (won't be out in my country until February, dammit) but yeah, I can understand the boners. And don't forget this show's been running for decades as a stage production, so it's got a built-in fanbase.

I also think if you don't know the musical and haven't experienced the emotion of it that you'll probably miss the point. It's like anything that gets a movie after years of existing in other forms - many of us who grew up with the book and the musical are loving the movie treatment - the things done right from the musical and the things from the book that have been restored.

I think the odds are fairly low that anyone who already declares "they don't get it" is likely to get it by seeing the movie. Still, it is a wonderful treatment of the material, and it still makes you cry and weep and yet, sends you home feeling uplifted.

However, there's nothing new about criticisms of the movie, people have been "not getting" the musical for over 25 years. Still, it has a powerful effect on millions of people who are embracing this movie totally.

Can I suggest you read some professional reviews by people who enjoyed the movie and were moved by it?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this secret.

You haven't seen it, yet you're judging those who are fans of it? Well, fucking YES, you should see it, if only so that you won't come across as being such an asshole.

The movie won't really help you understand the fanboners, especially if that's your attitude.

If you can see it live, that's a fantastic way to experience it. The music alone is enough for most people who are inclined to like musicals to fall in love. The book is famous for a reason (might I suggest the abridged version, though). It's a powerful musical that's actually about powerful themes (as opposed to, say, Phantom or Cats, which I do like, but they're not quite as epic in scale, y'know?). It's about redemption, forgiveness, courage, stupidity, fanaticism, and love.

It's very much a "your thing" vs "not your thing" deal, because the style/format is kinda really important to this movie's viewing experience, and if it's not your thing, you almost certainly won't like the movie, because the actual plot boils down to "poor people are miserable, then they get angry and rebel, some of them fall in love, then most of them die, while a police officer spends 17 years trying to catch a guy who stole a loaf of bread 36 years ago" which isn't really the kind of plot that can cause someone to love or hate the movie.

I have got to try reading this book again. I read the first 800 pages fifteen years ago right before Christmas break when I was an undergrad, and then when I got back to school a month later, I realized I would have to re-read the first 800 pages again so I could finish the last 800. which I did not do. *hangs head in shame*

And somehow, as much as I love musicals (mostly the ones that have been made into popular film versions), I missed ever seeing the musical. I think I really want to see this film. :)

I love musicals and I saw and enjoyed this movie in the theaters and I still don't understand why people are rabid over it.

It's a wonderful movie and the music is fantastic but the way people get so emotional over it I feel like I'm missing something. (Also is this the only musical movie adaptation? The only other version I've seen was the LA non-musical one. I've listened to the soundtrack of the original broadway production several times though.)

Also holy crap there are so many unbelievably defensive people in this thread calm the fuck down jeez this is exactly what the secret was talking about.

I should totally see this play, read this book, cause I hear Les is fucking awesome and I believe it.

I'm not worried about this kind of opinion. So what? I'd just enjoy my fandom and not worry about it.
