It's very much a "your thing" vs "not your thing" deal, because the style/format is kinda really important to this movie's viewing experience, and if it's not your thing, you almost certainly won't like the movie, because the actual plot boils down to "poor people are miserable, then they get angry and rebel, some of them fall in love, then most of them die, while a police officer spends 17 years trying to catch a guy who stole a loaf of bread 36 years ago" which isn't really the kind of plot that can cause someone to love or hate the movie.

That's not actually what happens, though? They just keep running into each other, it's not like Javert ever said "oh, I'm going to keep going after that guy" it's more like Javert was just minding his own business, doing his job, when all of a sudden he keeps running into this one guy.

Well, I was exaggerating, but it's pretty heavily implied that Valjean is on Javert's mind and he's constantly keeping an eye out for him.

However, that's not to say he isn't also keeping an eye out for a few dozen-odd other escaped criminals as well because that's apparently just how Javert rolls, and we just don't see that because we only see the parts where Valjean runs into him.

Sorry, it just really bugs me when people act like that is literally all that Javert does during the whole seventeen years. Rereading your comment, I don't think you were saying that seriously, and it was suppose to be a joke? I think? And I overreacted to it a bit, sorry!

Well, I don't think portraying it that way is that far off the mark because Javert's pursuit of Valjean is kind of a microcosm of Javert's whole life and worldview and personality. It's not all he does every day, but it is pretty indicative of what he does every day. All you need to know about Javert you know from his pursuit of Valjean, even though that particular pursuit is not all there is to his life.

Like, when he finds that he needs to choose between letting Valjean go (illegal), or bringing him in (immoral), his entire worldview implodes and everything he believed in his entire life is undermined and that's why he kills himself. It's certainly not a case of "well, I let the guy who I dedicated my ~whole life to catching~ go so now my life has no meaning" because that's...not really true, but at the same time it's not as simple as "oh noes I did one little bad thing".

I'm not sure I completely agree with that, though that is a good point. It's just, in the musical, we see him turn away from chasing Valjean, even when he knows that Valjean is in Paris (as seen when he turns away from chasing Valjean to try and spy on the Les Amis, though he knows that Valjean is in Paris, he has a different duty to preform.)

It's true that his life is undermined, but that's because every time he runs into Valjean, it's when Valjean is doing moral actions, not because Javert was chasing him the whole time.

Yeah...uh..that's not even remotely what I said? I said he's doing stuff SIMILAR to chasing Valjean all the time. Like chasing and prosecuting criminals with that same kind of righteous zeal that he always voices whenever he runs into Valjean, which fits into the same mentality as what drives him to chase Valjean. His thing with Valjean isn't his entire life, but it's kind of a metaphor for his entire life.

I dunno, for me it wasn't the plot that drew me in but rather the themes the plot was bringing out. By the end of the first act I was so hopped up on JUSTICE! MERCY! SACRIFICE! THE ESSENTIAL DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN SOUL! that when Marius and Cosette and Eponine started doing their thing, I was all "oh fuck really do we have to pause for a romantic subplot here WE KIND OF HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS GOING ON."* The plot itself is a rambling forty-coincidence pileup where one suspects Javert is the only policeman in all of France, but that's okay, it's mostly a pretext for abovementioned capslocking anyway.

* Or in other words, this cartoon. GIANT FURNITURE WALL.

I agree with your caplocking so hard! :D But yes, like I said, the plot was basically a vehicle, not really enough to judge the movie on.
