This is going to be like the Phantom movie, where you see internet profiles pop up that say things like

"TOTAL Broadway theater nerd!!!!! Location: Topeka, KS"

by people who have never set foot in New York City.

No movie (or touring production - the poor man's Broadway) can ever touch what that musical was on Broadway or the West End. I won't see it because it's an inferior production, yet it's a production that the masses can access, so there you go.

Also, the previews seem to be more focused on ~hot 'n' sexy older Cosette OMG sex appeal come see the movie we have the ladiez~ so it wouldn't be of interest anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god. This snobbery is the exact reason I stay so far away from theater fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Not everyone has the money or opportunity to travel to NYC to see plays on Broadway. That doesn't mean they're less of a fan. Stop being such a pretentious dick, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It does mean that, though. Until you've experienced something like Les Mis live, first-hand, in a world-class theater (NOT on a screen of any kind and NOT at the community playhouse), you honestly cannot have the same appreciation for it that a live audience would. It's just not physically possible. Does it matter that much in the scheme of things? No - but don't delude yourself.

Well fuck you if you haven't read the book! No musical can touch that. Also, screw all alt language adaptations! (<--sarcasm, btw.)

Just saying, his sort of arrogance is really annoying. No need to be so high and mighty on your Broadway stage. I like that there are so many avenues for the story to be told.

Sheesh, lookit the snobbery. "The poor man's Broadway." Give me a break.

No, I haven't seen it on Broadway. I've seen it twice on West End, though, so am I allowed to have an opinion on it? Because my opinion is that it was amazing both times and...

...

The local version that an all-under-18 cast put on over here a few years back was just as powerful and amazing. They were that good.

It's a good musical. People can be captivated by that without having to travel to the mecca of musicals.

Leaving aside the extremely dubious claim that the Broadway and West End productions were routinely superior to the touring casts... you realize you're being a trivial elitist shit about ~for the masses~ productions of... a musical about the downtrodden masses?

I get your point but want to point out that not having the opportunity to see something on Broadway doesn't mean people can't be into theater. Otherwise I agree that there tend to be people who want to say they're Broadway nerds even when they're not. Even I was like that back when Rent and Wicked were cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as someone who has seen both Phantom (on Broadway and the West End) and Les Miserables (West End and community theatre) onstage--more than once, even--I get kind of twitchy when theatre fans bitch about "the masses." The masses are what keep dinosaurs like Phantom and Les Miserables running; without tourist dollars, Phantom would have closed by now, and the original Broadway production of Les Miserables has been closed for years. I live in neither New York nor London, and currently can't afford to travel to either place, even though I'd like to. Also, I doubt every actor or actress currently on a Broadway or London stage was born in London or New York, some of them were probably born in Topeka, and their love of theatre might have been born in a poky high school production of Oklahoma. For every thousand screechy renditions of "On My Own," Broadway or the West End probably gains one or two new actresses. They have to come from somewhere. I get being pissed at having a fandom invaded by newbies obsessed with the sex appeal of people who aren't actually that good of singers, but Les Miserables at least won't flood the internet with paens to Gerald Butler's "sexy rockstar voice." Jackman may have done a terrible job of imitated Colm Wilkinson, but he won a Tony, so he's not hopeless, unlike every lead in Phantom with the exception of Patrick Wilson. And one more thing--don't try and be a snob about any of the British invasion, jukebox, or Disney musicals, because the Sondheim fans will all glare through their metaphorical monocles at you.

Well, you sound awfully proud of yourself. What a dumb reason to be elitist; people can't help where they're born, or where they get to live in many cases.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Fairly certain the person accusing everyone who can't afford a trip to London or Broadway of being a philistine is a troll. If they're not, it's kind of hilarious that they're bitching about the superiority of Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera. I've never met a theatre snob that would admit to liking either, although they're both better tolerated than anything by Wildhorn, and to be a real musical snob you'd better bow to Sondheim. That's not even touching on the people who think that all musicals are light entertainment/brain candy when compared to straight plays. I have no taste whatsoever. I'll watch Disney stuff, Lloyd Webber, Boublil and Schonberg--hell, I like Wicked, and all of these have been called the theatrical equivalent of McDonald's at some point. And I love live theatre. I'd love to go to Broadway and London again. But I doubt I'll get the chance any time soon. As to the OP of the secret, you don't have to watch the movie, but if you do I hope you enjoy it. I had fun, once I got past the extreme close-ups of pretty much everyone. Seriously, I don't go to the movies to count the actor's nose hairs.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh. I was a Broadway fan at seven. I don't mean that I actually saw the shows in NY, but my folks did every year and I grew up listening to the soundtracks. Since then, I've had the opportunity to see sublime Broadway productions and duds. I saw Ragtime in Toronto when it was preparing for Broadway and got blown away by the sheer talent assembled under one roof.

So, first off, people who live in Topeka or Nome or Minneapolis do travel and may get to NY, but even if they don't, that doesn't mean they can't be Broadway theater nerds.

If you're a fan who can't get to the theater for whatever reason (cost, location, scheduling), but you listen to the soundtracks,or check out performances on youtube, or savor the Tonys, or catch some of the PBS Great Performances recordings (and btw, they didn't care if they recorded Broadway or the Paper Mill Playhouse), yes, you can be a Broadway Theater nerd.

...And if you disagree with me, please do it quietly. I'm trying to listen to Seussical, here.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen a Broadway or West End production but I have the soundtracks for a lot of them. I know the Les Miserables soundtrack by heart and have for too many years to count, but I've never seen it performed anywhere. I'm glad to finally have an affordable opportunity to see the production, but I'm especially glad that assholes like you won't be in the theater with me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, do you know what the USA's largest outdoor theater is? The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri. It holds 10,779 people and has a stage that's 90 feet deep and 110 feet wide, or "a lot bigger than a Broadway theatre" (it holds near 10 times as many people). I first saw Les Miserable there in 2007, and it was the best thing I have ever seen on a stage. Now, granted, my sister claimed that she thinks the Broadway version of The Lion King was even better, but that's because that stage is specifically built for that show with its puppets and such. Even so, you might want to come and take in a few Muny shows in the free seats befor you judge the entire Midwest. You'll need binoculars, but you'll hear perfectly.

Also, imagine this voice (http://youtu.be/Yw0aoVpFCDw) singing "Master of the House." You're welcome.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
lol at people like you being elitist over Broadway productions. that's like a self-professed movie snob arguing that nothing can touch the aesthetic purity of The Avengers or Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. In both cases, we're talking about stories calculated to have mass appeal in order to make the most money. It doesn't warrant this classist bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
a production that the masses can access

In comparison to the watered down musical adaption of the 1000 page original book. Wow. You're a prick.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
OMG. As an actor? As a professional actor who's worked all over the world? We cringe at garbage like this. You're the reason theater is sometimes said to be a dying art. Because purist show queens like you use the art form as some sort of Mean Girl proxy, by which you can deploy your bitchy queeny putdowns, instead of a joyous art form which is intended to communicate, touch people, and BE INCLUSIVE.

Get the hell over yourself and your fetish with the OBP and go away, show queen.
