One word: Eponine.

(Marius and Cosette are dull as fuck, imo, but I absolutely adore the other characters. Especially Eponine.)

this x10000000000 I look forward to Samantha Barks' future works

I actually haven't seen the movie, so I'm excited to see her portrayal! She's hands down my favorite character in the book and the play, though.

really? I found her performance the most uninspired?

well, after Hugh Jackman's.

*ducks*

Compared to Russell Crowe's singing?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, don't get me started on his voice...I was cringing every time he opened his mouth...

DID HE JUST HAVE DENTAL SURGERY OR SOMETHING?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I probably should have clarified in my comment - I haven't seen the movie yet and was just talking about why people would like the play/book in general, since I think a lot of the enthusiasm for the movie is coming from people who are already fans. I'm personally a huge fan of both and she's the biggest draw for me when it comes to those.

Was anyone really as uninspired as Crowe?

"Star...sigh...in your multitudes...falling as Lucifer fell or something like that...hm."

Accurate, honestly.

[personal profile] scarletsymphony 2012-12-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
to clarify, I mean Russell Crowe when I wrote this.

no, actually. I'm just stupid.

Eponine is pretty much the patron saint of lonely teenage girls everywhere.

And I'm only saying that because many many years ago, I too remember singing "On My Own" alone in my bedroom.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, so true. I used to listen to "A Little Fall of Rain" when I was feeling particularly emo and sit around and cry. Ah, youth.

ENJOLRAS THOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
ALSO AWESOME. Honestly, everyone is awesome except Marius and Cosette, and they're not completely awful. Just kind of dull.

Re: Why there are boners

[personal profile] wauwy 2012-12-31 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with this. Theirs is the dullest story ever told.

Eddie Redmayne actually makes Marius fairly magnetic, but no matter how hard Amanda Seyfried tries, it's clinically proven to be impossible to make adult!Cosette interesting. Maybe at the very end when (spoiler) dies, but that's about it.

Re: Why there are boners

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaah, it is incredibly dull. The fact that there are so many other, much more exciting storylines going on probably doesn't do their whole semi-generic love story any favors, either.

I don't think there's any hope for adult!Cosette regardless of who plays her, honestly. Something about puberty just sucked all the interesting out of her. Even in the book the only time she manages to be somewhat compelling is the spoilery moment you mentioned.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
But Marius and his complete dorkiness and his inability to keep from voicing stupid political opinions ("BOSSUET, MY REVOLUTIONARY FRIEND, YOUR NAME REMINDS ME OF NAPOLEON SO I LIKE YOU") and the thing with Valjean's handkerchief where he thought it was Cosette's and therefore basically rubbed it all over him until he figured out it was actually her dad's - how can you /not/ find him amusing? He's great even musical-verse - Eddie Redmayne really milks the funny lines in AHFOL for all they're worth, and Enjolras giving no fucks about his "lonely soul" is just great.

And, idk, I like Cosette /because/ she's allowed to be sweet, even after growing up in such terrible circumstances - a reverse Fantine/Eponine, sort of. Then again, I like Jane from Pride and Prejudice, and I'm aware a lot of people don't, so I suppose this opinion may not be valid?

What I'm saying, though, is to each his/her own. Some people will like this movie for Cosette/Marius! Some people will like it for Eponine! People have different reasons for liking things, but there are many things in this film to like!
