Personally, I've met some really nice ones! A few people in the communities are a little elitist, and have this "______ HAS SLIGHTLY CHANGED THEIR LOOK/SOUND, THEY'RE ABANDONING THEIR TRUE FANS!!" complex, but they can be pretty easy to avoid.

I spent some time in the Nine Inch Nails fandom, and all I ever heard about was the constant, unrelenting criticism against Trent Reznor (the main, pretty much single leading front behind NIN). I hardly saw any good comments about anything. :[ There were a few other fandoms like that, but I totally see your point. I know some really nice people as well! I just never got into bandom because I was been turned off mostly by how I saw a lot of things handled. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place. >:

I guess it works both ways; every fandom has its bad points and good points.
