I'm sure those who watch this community have noticed a trend: secrets which pertain to Avatar (without a focus on pairings) are often posted to express just how unfathomably in love the secret's creator is with the show. Of course, this is no coincidence, and many of us can be verifiable snobs about that love, it's true. But I must say I feel no shame about being so, because, hell, I feel that the attention is more than deserved, and it has nothing to do with "the shiny." Wow, am I turned off by "the shiny," and it seems that's all much mainstream anime is anymore. The appeal lies in befriending the popular fans, using the most desirable icons, and purchasing the newest merchandise. The only joy to be derived is in the high of conformity or whatever other guilty pleasures one feels, especially those of the aesthetics/yaoi enthusiasts (when the two aren't one and the same). There's definitely something to be said for fitting in. Safety is practically ensured, and as humans we crave safety. However we also crave progress, and as I watch Avatar, I do not feel my intellect to be dying a slow death. The same can hardly be said for the effects of (every-anime that is, I guess, enjoyable enough). But then there's the argument of tastes based on experience and... I won't even go there.

Just try the show without letting bias sway you or being entirely predictable by judging the show by its "shiny." If you give it an honest shot and don't like it, well, congratulations, you have no soul.

Most anime is hardly intellectually challenging, but that doesn't justify your being a snob, thank you. People enjoy what they enjoy for a myriad of reasons, "the shiny" being only one of them. (Though I am curious... How are you defining "the shiny"?)

I didn't ask for your justification, and do not care if I receive it or not.

I'm pretty sure I already defined it!
