I don't think they should be treated any differently, as I said in my comment. Anime is also an abbreviation for Japanimation, aka Japanese style animation- reffering to the art style. Which Avatar is not. :/ (though like I said, they do use some of the 'anime' techniques for showing emotion... the distinct difference between Avatar and an anime is that Avatar's animation articulates words where as anime rarely (if ever) does.)

"Cartoons" are just as much "animation" as "animation" is "cartoons", like you said they technically mean the same- so I don't see need to create a practically imaginary difference between the two.

I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to point out, so I'm sorry if my reply is a little confusing as well? XD

Mmm my point was that they are treated differently, and that that's just the way things are in mainstream culture right now. :O
