Trigger warning: illness and death

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
There's a 90-year-oldman who's been a friend of the family for years before I was born (he actually started as a friend of my grandparents). While I never spent a ton of time with him, this is the guy who co-signed the lease on my first two apartments in college because my parents didn't have the credit to do so, and a few times a year we all try to get together for lunch (where, despite our best efforts, it is never our turn to pay).

Well, he's not doing well. I last saw him in June and we tried to reach him over Christmas to wish him happy holidays and see about taking him to lunch for his birthday in January, but his phones had been disconnected and his cars were gone. Today, Mom found out he's in the hospital. Mostly he's just old with an old heart, but then he also got pneumonia and things just aren't looking good.

They all live about 130 miles from me. I just got back from five days there last week (left when I got off work Monday, came back before work Friday), and I'm trying to decide if I want to trek back over there this week now, too. Through some scheduling magic, I somehow have a three-day weekend (Tues-Thurs), so I could, but I was already planning to go next week, before we knew all about this, with Christmas gifts for my nieces (who were not in town over Christmas and whose gifts I still have not purchased).

I feel like I should go -- if not tomorrow then Wednesday/Thursday, at least. But I'm kind of in this place where, I know I would probably hate myself if I missed my last opportunity to see him alive because I was feeling lazy, but I kind of don't want to go. Part of it's the wanting a weekend at home to myself with my cat after five days of dealing with family (who I love, but it's a stressful place to be). But also...

I was there when my grandma died, and that was OK. She was on her side, facing me and it really did pretty much look like she went to sleep. But then we all stepped out so the nurses could do there thing, and when they said we could go back in, htey had rolled her over onto her back, and because she didn't have any teeth, her lips kind of drooped backward so it looked like her mouth was hanging open, and even though I immediately turned around and left that room, THAT'S the last memory I have of my grandma. And about half the time -- even when I'm thinking of the good times, THAT is what still pops into my head.

And my mom said that when they went to see Friend in the hospital he was all swollen up and looked really bad, and I don't know that I want that to be my last memory of him. But I feel shitty about that, because he's the one who's dying. Mom said when they showed up he just smiled and was so happy that people were there to see him, and it just feels really selfish of me to essentially be all "Yeah, you can't see me again before you die, because that's not how I want to remember you."

I'm probably going to go, but I wish none of this were happening.

Re: If you were visiting your country/area what would you want to see?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
What an excellent question! I've been on both sides of the equation: when I go to visit friends, I try to let them lead the way, but I usually come armed with a few "must do" things just in case they're feeling swamped and don't want to play tour guide for me. When people come to my hometown, I always try to take them off the beaten path, since there are so many things that they can do in other places (i.e. chain stores, similar restaurants, etc.) But I've had that backfire on me, too. One time, when my in-laws came to visit, I was taking them to all the cool local places I'd found and my mother-in-law asked me privately later if we could, in fact, do some of the big touristy things so that my brother-in-law would be more entertained.

So I guess the roundabout answer here is start out with the things that your friend wants to do. I mean, she's the one making the huge trip, and she may her heart set on places for a reason. Wait and see what her reaction is like: is she totally happy with all her choices? If not, or if she's making noises about being disappointed, then you can use your own cool knowledge and swoop in and save the day. Either way though, isn't it going to be fun hanging out with your friend? :)

(P.S. Selfridges but not Harrods? I'm as confused as you are.)

Re: How do people draw things?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
As a first year art student, USE A REFERENCE TO LEARN EVERYTHING
Pictures, anatomy books, everything helps but honestly, doing things from life are the best teachers of all.

http://posemaniacs.com Is a really good resource for practicing figures

deviantart also has a ton of stock reference photos.

Also, everything you learn to draw isn't just knowing from looking, it's experience built up from every time you draw that thing- for example, I know the planes of the face well enough to guess at the shading and approximate locations of features- halfway down the face for eyes, halfway between the eyes and chin is the septum, half between septum and chin is the mouth etc.
Good luck!

THANK YOU

I kept typing it SSND which got me nun's websites lol

I have just recently begun to realize that might be my "problem" too.

And before anyone starts snarking about immature teenagers going through phases, I'm 28. :P

I have seen everything Misha Collins was in (YES, EVEN THE SERIAL KILLER MOVIE KARLA, GOD HELP ME, I DON'T RECOMMEND IT UNLESS YOU'RE DEVOTED) and that is not his voice, if only because A) he only has that scraping the bottom register voice in SPN, and B.) right near the part where he says "portal" it sounds like this is a non-American, possibly Australian, pretending to be American.

It's the personal touches that make all the difference, really.

(Haha, as long as it's not cherry jell-o with fruit chunks or something similar, I think you're okay.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Cobb that is not how you take a bath.

DA

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now I just want an episode where Dean either gets given a uterus or completely genderswapped. Although, yeah, as far as SPN goes, that's still pretty tame.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
How could they not? I can't say I'd blame Jack, either. I mean, the braid and the priest-gear? That's like pure fetish fodder right there. (And Jack is Jack. Everyone wants him.)

Shut it Kyuubey. I'm not contracting with you even if you did get new earrings.

Now all I can think about is that headcanon that Titanic & Inception are the same movie because inceptions opens with Cobb waking up on a beach after Jack drowned at the end of Titanic or whatever.

-Read more than one real book (not fic!) for fun this year (the only book I finished this past year was Sarah Silverman's autobiography, for some reason)

-Spend more time in the lab honing my technique. I wasn't in there enough this past year.

-Continue to improve my study habits

-Spend more time with my neighbors in my apartment building because they're really nice and friendly.

-Go out to more events at school, even if they're goofy

-Create more fanworks

Another tip is to try to avoid things like n!s, s!b, etc. It's just clutter that doesn't add anything. Either incorporate it into the text or leave it out.

If you can sum things up into a tl;dr at the end, consider just making that the whole secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno if this will help but...it's really, really not just about appearance/body type. I am in a relationship with someone who perceives their body as ugly because they're clinically obese, have stretchmarks, and don't have any of the physical hallmarks they think of as being attractive. They sometimes gripe that I'm much too attractive for them, etc. But (as I always point out in return)...my partner is amazing at sex. Really skilled and attentive, will try anything I want, has broadened my own sexual horizons a lot, is not at all afraid to bring up things they want to try, many of which I've found fun too, but they're never offended if I don't.

So I feel like it's kinda a pity that this entire thread is about how people see their bodies. Sex is a skill, it's not just something you look like, and good in bed is a damn sight hotter than attractive but useless.
