ayrt I'm still not entirely sure how I came to know her name in the first place, but I would gladly read fic about her.

I don't know about the statistics, but I know that visibility as someone who's LGBTQ in Japan is really, really shitty. It's also considered to be less of an orientation and more of a fetish, so there are a lot of issues that come with that. I think as a foreigner in Japan, it's easy to feel like that kind of sentiment has less weight because you may have friends and acquaintances who feel that way, but it's not your family, either. And foreigners also get a certain degree of leeway when it comes to not totally fitting the social expectations that someone who's been born and raised there wouldn't be privy to. I can actually get why people would say that they'd rather be considered weird than be told they're going to hell. They both suck, but the whole going to hell thing implies that you're an all around terrible person and deserved to be punished because part of you is wrong, which can be a lot more hurtful than people just thinking you're weird. But at the end of the day, people thinking you're weird and judging you for your sexuality still sucks balls.

So, yeah, it really is a case of it being "better" in certain ways, depending on how you look at it, but I think sometimes people (not the anon above's friend - but a lot of people in anime and Japanese fandoms in general) mistake the "better" and the fact that it's a different kind of problematic for meaning it's not at all bad. Which, yeah, isn't really the case. :/

This week I've been having an email conversation about the Hobbit movie with a dear friend who is almost 70. She and my mother met via LOTR fandom in 1962.

I would hesitate to say 'non-issue' when the UK doesn't have gay marriage yet, though we do have civil partnerships and marriage is in the pipeline. It's less of an issue, for definite.

Years ago, I made a trollish secret about the deludedness of people who seriously believe the book they're writing will have a fandom. The butthurt was delicious. The irony is that my main fandom is a book fandom - one that has never had a TV or movie adaptation. There's so, so few active book-only fandoms out there, though.

I embroider/cross stitch - quite good at it, I've been told. I can also sew a little, but that comes from being the daughter of a master dollmaker more than actual interest ^^;;

Yeah, the leeway given to foreigners can go a long way in these feelings. As a foreigner, you aren't expected (practically not even allowed in many contexts) to ever be a part of the in group in Japanese culture, no matter how many years you spend there. Therefore, one could theoretically be seen as weird as an LGBTQ person, but still otherwise be welcomed as much as one can be as a foreigner. Whereas a native born Japanese LGBTQ person would be shunned and ostracized.

And yeah, it's also a very different scenario and culture being involved in the differences. The weight of something in one culture (ie, being considered weird for something) can have very different connotations in different cultures (can vary in how alienated you are in US culture due to individualistic nature of said culture as well as varying attitudes in areas across the country - but can lead to some very serious problems in a group-centered culture such as Japan's if one isn't like the rest of the group). Both attitudes toward someone of a different sexual orientation are shitty, but in vastly different ways between the cultural contexts.

Awww. I enjoyed that thread, especially the part where all us book-fans were nerding out over which parts not to read. My favourite thread this week was this one, though - seriously, that might be my favourite f!s thread in a little over three years.

I don't know what you're 'supposed' to do, but I (and my siblings) chose not to see either of my parents after they died (fortunately open-casket funerals are not the done thing where I'm from). I'm still glad I saw them both shortly before they died. You didn't say how long ago you lost your grandma - imx those intrusive memories of sickness and death fade over time and you wind up remembering a more diffuse picture of the people you've lost.

And seriously, being selfish about sickness and death is normal and it's a pity it's so damn taboo that it's almost impossible to talk about it. We can't help defaulting to selfish, especially not in the face of something as unimaginable as losing someone who has always been there for us. There's nothing wrong with feeling that way, but I would like to vote against you acting out of selfishness in this instance.

imo Homestuck is completely worth it, but I urge you to do it in sane batches. I spread it out over several months, and that was in 2011, good god, and it's still advancing at a rate of over four panels a day. I am cheerful about getting a hundred or more panels behind then having a Homestuck Night to catch up. Mainlining it breeds insanity.

You know what, one of the things that I was most disappointed about in the live-action movie was that they made his scar basically look like "Am I missing an eyebrow!?" I found it unexpectedly intriguing in the cartoon.

I hope your writing skills are better than your secret-making skills. Ew.

Hah, reminds me of a scene in the Lilo and Stitch cartoon where Pleakly pulls Nani's hair into a really neat bun and there's a comment along the lines of 'don't touch it, it'll explode!'
