It probably wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't words on words - that was just a terrible idea.

The secret itself is about as long as your average K-pop secret, imo, though badly in need of a proofread.

Re: TB

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
and a real shame too, because it's a topic worth discussing

tl;dr: it's basically about how people being assholes in the internet and in fandom is silly and is definitely not badass, edgy nor cool at all, and refusing to take accountability for your behavior online is immature and only what is "expected" because we have allowed it to be so

I agree with you. If anyone acted like that in a workplace, they'd get reported to HR. If they acted that way towards people in real life, they'd soon find themselves being shunned (except by morons with the same attitude).

Hell, they'd find themselves in fights.

TB Repeat?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't WAY WAY WAY too big and too busy a repeat? It feels like it was posted a couple of months ago. Most of us didn't bother trying to decipher it then either.

OP

couldn't have been. I just created it it two days before the 29th.
Also sorry for the mistakes I was in a rush, I only caught the first initial mistake (which I resubmitted to fix.)

Too Big transcript

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
(Transcriber's note: I tried to fix minor typos and grammatical mistakes along the way to make it more legible.)

This is kinda harsh but....

I am really sick of the "welcome to the internet, leave your accountability at the door" culture that has been embraced lately in fandom and internet in general. I think it's idiotic and immature, and despite what its supporters claim, it's nothing like real life and for good reason: The internet is the only place where you can be an utter ass to someone for so much as disagreeing with you about which fictional people should screw, and then have a bunch of people tell that person off and say THEY are the ass for being annoyed or even bothered by your obnoxious behavior.

If you called someone a "fucking shitty human being" or told them to kill themselves at the workplace, guess what, your ass would be fucking fired. It's only a norm because we've made it and, no, it's not all right.

There is nothing all right or badass about being a blame-flinging child who can't accept responsibility for their own behavior -- it's pathetic.

Also, "butthurt" is starting to be used for "actually angry at dealing with obnoxious asshat". Someone else is "stupid", because you haven't realized that when you insult people they might get a little annoyed, honestly?

s!b: lol OP is a whiny baby for expecting people to show basic civility.

b!s: being honest =/= saying every single thing that crosses your mind no matter how inappropriate and showing manners =/= giving asspats or telling people they're special snowflakes.

tl;dr I'm not saying people should never say anything that isn't nice of should never give critique. I'm bothered that so many people are acting like refusing to accept accountability and being an utter antisocial asshole is a good thing and a sign of strength. No, it's not. Telling people it's everyone else's fault when they say something rude and they can do whatever they please is not a good idea and is totally stupid.

Background is VERY related. (Transcriber's note: It's a screenshot of a TV Tropes page involving the subject.)

What I got from this secret:

"YOU GUISE IT'S NOT FAIR THAT PEOPLE AREN'T PLAYING BY MY ARBITRARY RULES SO I'M GOING TO MAKE A FALSE COMPARISON TO BEAHAVIOUR IN THE WORKPLACE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED CONTRACTS REGARDING BEHAVIOUR"

Dear OP: Yes, some people are asshats online. However, they are generally allowed to be asshats on the internet. If you think they are violating a rule of some sort, report them to the people who enforce the rules. If they are being asshats in your space (eg, your journal), ban them or otherwise lock things down until they lose interest and go away. If neither of these things apply, then leave them alone and save yourself the aggravation and F!S the eyerolling. You cannot enforce any standard of decency on people.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
the only reason they're "allowed" is because they're hiding behind screen names rather than spouting their rudeness in real life.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
No, they're allowed because there's no rule against it. What you're suggesting is that they're getting away with breaking a social contract, which is ephemeral and non-binding at best, and is quite often ignored. If you're lamenting your inability to metaphorically chase someone out of town, then I wish you luck maintaining your sanity while banging your head against a brick wall in an attempt to deal with the asshats of the world.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
okay I have no plans on physically chasing people down. My main problem is that being rude is not just tolerated or ignored, on many spots on the internet it's ENCOURAGED. People being rude are cheered on and supported and told their actions are cool and tough and the people they are being rude to are blamed for their behavior .

Hell on one art site i went to I was a little shocked by the mantra "being bullied? Just deactivate your account". Let's think about that logic. "being harassed by someone? It's YOUR responsibility to leave rather than the admin's responsibility to stop harassment or people who harass people to um I dunno stop fucking harassing people. I don't care that people are rude in all honesty. I just want them to be held accountable for their own behavior and not get away with "i'm rude because i'm on the internet get used to it". I mean even I know that when I'm an ass,it's because i'm a hot headed ass who's too quick to speak.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no one is ever an asshole on facebook with their real name or anything

Re: TB

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
the op sure was melodramatic and long-winded, but they've got a point

why can't we all just get along

and not be assholes to each other

sobs

TB

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I get pretty annoyed with people who go out of their way to say mean stuff just to be "edgy" at my fandom, but I've learned that I have to ignore it. The few times I've called some people out it mostly resulted into a huge fight where people were drawing lines in the dirt and picking sides. When my fandom was beginning to die down, I recall one particular girl who was shitting all over anything and everything and I told her she needed to calm the eff down and have some manners, and the only reason no one had called her out was because they didn't want drama, and she replied with, "LOL JUST THE INTERNET WHY SO SRS LOL". Yes, it's just the internet, so why does everyone feel like they have a right to be dickholes behind the computer?

Re: TB

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
People like that can fuck right off. Do they think the people (yes, people) they're talking to have no feelings? I'd dump anyone who pulled that crap with me - LOL INTERNET WHY SO SRS or not.
