You've answered your own question: it's kinda like the Reductio ad Hitlerum. By calling something that doesn't actually fit the definition of gross "gross", you equate it to poop and boogers and incest.

It's basically a way to be as contemptuous of and condescending towards the person whose ideas you are insulting as possible, to imply they are so awful they physically gross you out the way someone covered in shit would.
