Fandom usage of the word "gross"

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
So, in yesterday's batch, I found this comment: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/732733.html?thread=615306045#cmt615306045

And uh...I'm the anon who posted the "huh"? reply below it. What exactly does "gross" mean in that context? I thought the word gross was for, well, gross things. Things that gross you out, like poop or boogers or bodily fluids or icky sexual dynamics. Is there some trendy new definition of "gross" that I'm not aware of?

It's less a fandom thing and more an online usage particular to a lot of Social Justice spaces (or spaces where social issues tend to be discussed/debated; these spaces also tend to have a lot of language-policing going on). It's used a lot as a kind of shorthand for something being disgusting, wrong, whatever ~ist. Or at least that's how I've commonly seen it used. So, similar meaning to the one you're thinking of, but with the implication that what is "gross" is offensive as well as disgusting.

Sometimes people use it for things that leave them feeling unpleasant. So in this case, making jokes about people getting shot just struck a bad chord with them.

Hope this helps?

You've answered your own question: it's kinda like the Reductio ad Hitlerum. By calling something that doesn't actually fit the definition of gross "gross", you equate it to poop and boogers and incest.

It's basically a way to be as contemptuous of and condescending towards the person whose ideas you are insulting as possible, to imply they are so awful they physically gross you out the way someone covered in shit would.

It's not at all new or trendy.

Gross can refer to things that are "icky/disgusting" it also is frequently used as indecent -- which I think is the context you're looking for in that link, though I find nothing wrong with substituting the word "disgusting."

Gross can also be used as another word for excessive, e.g. "a gross overreaction."

I really hate this usage of 'gross' - I don't think associating the physical disgust reflex with someone's words is necessarily wise, especially not if it's taking the place of reason.

It's becoming overused to the point that it's losing all meaning, too. I've gotten to the point where I can't help but roll my eyes when I see it used in this way.

I use it like this for things that make me uncomfortable, and I associate it with the disgusted expression I get on my face when I read or see those things. I've never thought about it, and I'm not especially proud of it, but I definitely didn't pick it up from any online or social justice spaces.
