Re: Fandom usage of the word "gross"

It's not at all new or trendy.

Gross can refer to things that are "icky/disgusting" it also is frequently used as indecent -- which I think is the context you're looking for in that link, though I find nothing wrong with substituting the word "disgusting."

Gross can also be used as another word for excessive, e.g. "a gross overreaction."
