I HATE the idea that people on the internet aren't real. It excuses anonymous cruelty AND belittles the wonderful relationships people can have with anyone regardless of physical distance.

I never thought of this before ;that making the so called 'real' world and relationships formed on the internet different- instead of just a different way to socialize makes the cruelty that happens online somehow 'less'. And agreed, it also deeply cuts that sometimes the best relationships can be formed 100s, 1000s, 10000s of miles away. I have made some of the dearest friends I've had through the internet and mostly through LJ/fandom, and I'm always getting that 'don't you have 'real' friends'. They are real. They just don't live down the street from me.
