I have a pretty small family (well, at east the part that's not abroad). As for people we've had over:one of them was one of my dad's colleagues who was an expat and didn't have family here, or there's my mom's best friend, who's jewish (and therefore has no family that celebrates x-mas, but since everyone around her does, it would also kinda suck to just sit at home). And mostly it's just an excuse to get together.
I'd never push anyone, obviously. I'm pretty much an introvert myself, so I'd ask once, maybe twice.
Like I said, it's a really fine line. Some people really prefer to be alone. Some people are horribly sad underneath their brave face. All you can do is reach out and give options, and hope they're a big girl/boy who can say yes/no according to preference.
Sorry about your dad :(
