Maiar probably don't have to -- but Melian had a kid. I bet their bodies are as lifelike as they want. Gandalf ate, drank, and smoked -- I would guess he had a functioning digestive system.

Saruman might have chosen not to fart. Then again, the Istari might have been required to assume a certain amount of bodily functions... yeah, I wouldn't rule it out.

Yeah, for the Istari it probably is down to the question of, "how far did you decide to change yourself?"

Melian having a kid probably has to do with the same question. I mean, having a kid doesn't mean she had to have it the way we do. Unless... it was explained like that? (I honestly don't think I remember much about Melian.)

Ahaha, now I'm thinking of Saruman having to fart all the time and cursing his stupid body.

She had a kid with an elf. It's been a while since I read the Silmarillion, but IIRC it was implied she did it more or less the usual way.

Huuuuuhhhh... then yeah, it goes down to "How close did you make your own body replica thing?" I mean, we know she gave herself working genitalia but did she care to give herself a working digestive tract? Nobody knows!
