Re: The joys of overthinking things

Uh, kind of unrelated, but whenever I poke holes in Doctor Who's science blunders, one of my casual friends keeps going "lol it's science fiction, why are you overthinking it?"

I know it's scifi, and rather soft at that, but... Parting of the Ways. When the daleks come for Lynda and the one is outside the space station, its head lights up and you can tell it's shouting "Exterminate!" But it's in space, so it's completely silent. They got that part dead on, and it was terrifying to me partly because of that. I don't think it's overthinking a scifi series, when I know that they can do "real science" well and make it dramatic to boot, to point out that it gets basic stuff wrong, and every time he makes fun of me for wanting a little internal consistency because "it's not real anyway lol" I want to punch him in his idiot face. I love when shows play with science and get it right! I love thinking about the ramifications of stuff that they get right! I even love pointing out silly blunders, and occasionally trying to overthink things back into compatibility with reality! And having this moron blunder through my mood every time I talk about it annoys the shit out of me.

Jesus that got long. Sorry to rant about something so tangentially related, just gotta get it out of my system.
