The joys of overthinking things

[personal profile] ryttu3k 2013-01-03 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by, uh, secret 10, do you tend to overthink things in fandom? Try to apply the real world to fantasy and sci fi? (It's frustrating but fun at the same time!) What sort of things do you overthink? Do you despair at overthinking in yourself or others, or do you embrace it?

By way of example, some of my overthinking things:

- Working out the geological changes required to turn Ocarina of Time-era Hyrule into Twilight Princess-era Hyrule (it involves tectonic activity and aridification),

- Analysisng the background, motives, and social interaction for a character in Skyward Sword,

- Attempting to work out the gigantic headache that is time travel in the Zelda series,

- Outlining the diets and food production of both the Zeldaverse and the Pokemonverse, and

- Overthinking to the point of fridge horror when you realise that in Pokemon Black and White 2, you can meet trainers with high-levelled (60+) Pokemon that evolve via happiness, and the realisation that either they're deliberately keeping their Pokemon from evolving (or don't want to evolve, which is also a possibility, admittedly), or they're unhappy despite the multiple wins required to be that highly-levelled, which indicates they could possibly be mistreated.

Yes.

Trying to work out how, say, magical or supernatural powers work, logical chains of events, etc.

It's fun, but sometimes it reveals holes in the actual work, so then it is time to just let it go and not think too hard about it, lest you drive yourself spare.

I enjoy it, but I never ever share it most of my fandoms basically roll their eyes when I do it and the one who doesn't...I'm not completely sure she even gets what I'm doing ^^;;.

But I love figuring out the nitty gritty details of how a world works! I also tend to do the reverse and think about a concept, like the most recent one would be 'What if luck was a force that exerted an obvious impact on the world around it?', and just build a world around that. I also don't really share those though. ^^;;

.../coughs Yeah, I know. Geek and all that jazz.

As a writer I always overanalyze how things are written and why but I know other people find that boring

However, a funny thing that always makes me wonder is women on adventures and their periods. It sounds stupid but it really makes me think.

My boyfriend and I have all sorts of discussions about the logic/world mechanics of stuff XD Usually we try to make it make sense in the world context with a bit of our own logic (I did this with Kingdom Hearts and apparently nearly broke the universe), but sometimes we just get absurd. It's really fun!

I was going to answer your post with a "No I don't imagine fictional characters from the games I play farting" and now I'm totally doing just that. I'm not sure If I'm humiliated or amused.

I guess I usually tend to think about how gay characters live in those worlds since they are very often heteronormative. Or at what age do the NPCs start to feel like old shit since they can't save the world anymore? IMO a game featuring those forgotten characters from games would be kinda interesting maybe.

It's one of those things that you never actually think about, or at least you pretend you don't, and then someone actually SAYS it and now you're wondering whether the Maiar have human-like digestive tracts and whether dwarves fart around forges...

My boyfriend and I jokingly started planning a "Pokemon: Geriatric Version" where everyone was a cranky old fart, including the pokemon XD

Sometimes I do! I generally love doing it - if something awesome gets ruined for you when you overthink it, rather than just becoming insane and hilarious in addition to being awesome, chances are either the thing in question is not that awesome, or (more likely) you just don't have a sense of humor worth a damn.

Oh, yeah, all the time. Most frequently, overthinking whatever political element is in something I like, because I'm a huge politics geek, but I'll do it with anything. I love it, it's great, I don't know why you wouldn't want to do it.

Uh, kind of unrelated, but whenever I poke holes in Doctor Who's science blunders, one of my casual friends keeps going "lol it's science fiction, why are you overthinking it?"

I know it's scifi, and rather soft at that, but... Parting of the Ways. When the daleks come for Lynda and the one is outside the space station, its head lights up and you can tell it's shouting "Exterminate!" But it's in space, so it's completely silent. They got that part dead on, and it was terrifying to me partly because of that. I don't think it's overthinking a scifi series, when I know that they can do "real science" well and make it dramatic to boot, to point out that it gets basic stuff wrong, and every time he makes fun of me for wanting a little internal consistency because "it's not real anyway lol" I want to punch him in his idiot face. I love when shows play with science and get it right! I love thinking about the ramifications of stuff that they get right! I even love pointing out silly blunders, and occasionally trying to overthink things back into compatibility with reality! And having this moron blunder through my mood every time I talk about it annoys the shit out of me.

Jesus that got long. Sorry to rant about something so tangentially related, just gotta get it out of my system.

Sometimes! I never really thought of the specific example in secret 10 (though I suspect no for Saruman because Maia can do whatever the hell they want). For Lord of the Rings, though, I've always wondered about the orcs, and the logistics of feeding and housing them in Mordor. I maintain that if Sauron had won, he would probably expend a lot of manpower building apartment buildings for all his servants, because damn he has a lot.

But yeah, analyzing things is fun! And I enjoy talking about it.

I once had a conversation with several friends over lunch. We were trying to work out the biology of the Twilight universe. I remember coming to the conclusion that the vampire "venom" was actually a virus that modifies cells and can only be transmitted by direct blood-to-blood contact, or something like that.

We also once ended up discussing how inheritance of the magical gene functioned in Harry Potter. It was awesome, but had too much complicated bio for me to remember most of it anymore.

I way overthink food in every single fantasy or SF setting. Like, if a fantasy setting is clearly supposed to be equivalent to Europe in the Middle Ages but they have potatoes, I have to figure out if that universe's equivalent of the post-Columbian exchange happened early, or if they're supposed to be native there in this universe. A culture having rice implies things about its climate and geography; so do oats, or wine, or tomatoes, or peppers. And it drives me crazy when an author violates those things and doesn't even bother to handwave it.

The most interesting fandom to think about food for is Pokemon, for me. I mean, Pokemon are pretty clearly sapient in a lot of cases, and yet in the anime, Ash fantasises about eating Magikarp. And I'm just thinking, what would the local Gyarados think about that...? Why is Ash fantasising about eating a sapient being? Are people generally vegetarian in the Pokeverse, since they've largely retconned out non-Pokemon animals but there's still plenty of plants around? Do people make scrambled unfertilised Pokemon eggs? These are big questions!

I'll sometimes spend waaaay too long overthinking things like magic systems and cultural ramifications of plot events.

Related, I also love seeing fanart of world-saving characters doing mundane things. I have a picture of some of the pokemon protagonists browsing the shelf at a Mart. It's a reminder that they aren't a champion all the time.

Ooh - got any more Pokemon art like that? I found this gorgeous gallery on Pixiv that had basically... average, every-day stuff, and I loved it. Here we go.
