Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
Patti Smith, "Because the Night." Arguable because her (IMNSHO improved) version hit the charts before Bruce's was released. Also her cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," largely because Smith can do the mood better than most, and the most obnoxiously overrated lyrics of "grunge" need to be done over banjo with an improvised beat-poetry spoken word bridge.
Although "I Drove All Night" was written for Orbison, Cyndi released it first in a version that reeks of sexual desire, gas station coffee, and cheez-its. Her version stands as one of the best love songs of the 80s, recorded when she was arguably at her best. Orbison's version suffers from overproduction and Orbison not being at his best.
Devo's "Satisfaction". Devo does cynicism and repressed sexuality much better than Mick Jagger.
I'm silly in love with Kiki and Herb's cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart."
