remixes/covers that are better than the original
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)For example, I think the CREEP Remix of Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXra-OVK0Dw) is way better than the Alpines original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STh0PaH1LjA).
Also, this cover of Toxic is way better than the original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqKZ_WIK5ms
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)It's just... much... better. :)
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:41 am (UTC)(link)The more you know!
(And tbh I kinda like the contrast between this and the original, this one's more cynical.)
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:51 am (UTC)(link)More reasonably, Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. Yes, the original has charm, but Houston completely blew it, and most other (torch) songs out of the water.

Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 02:23 am (UTC)(link)I came here to say exactly that. And somebody else has said it before me. Somebody else's first thought was also Shatner's cover of Common People.
What the actual fuck??? :/
We're what's wrong with the world, Other Anon.

Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
I like the Guns N Roses version of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" better than Dylan's (although Dylan's version is awesome).
I like pretty much every cover of "Hallelujah" ever, but the Jeff Buckley one has the special place in my heart.
I adore Ryan Adams and Elton John's duet of "Tiny Dancer" which is not the same as a cover, but still. So good.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Battle of Evermore is a huge improvement on Led Zeppelin's. Welcome to the Machine is also excellent, but it only barely beats out the original, depending on my mood that day.
Gregorian has quite a few that I think are better, although I can't remember them off the top of my head. Basically all they do is covers, though, so it's like shooting fish in a barrel to find a good one with them.
Dream Theater's To Tame a Land (original)
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
Unfortunately I discovered this brilliant cover of It's a Sin just after the band broke up.
Gwar nailed a live studio version of Carry on My Wayward Son.
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
I love this version of Eye of the Tiger, no lie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlIAmCfHzbg
This I actually couldn't find on youtube. I saw it ages ago on TV and I had to track it down. It's a cover of 'Eternal Flame.' So much more fun than the original. http://fliiby.com/file/634067/92vpua7s4i.html
And I love almost anything more when it's covered by a soft tenor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wyGitoJKGE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 09:12 am (UTC)(link)Love the Stones, but I like this version better.
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
Alanis Morisette's cover of "Crazy"
Annie Lennox's cover of "Take Me To the River"
Annie Lennox's cover of "Put a Little Love In Your Heart" with Al Green
Bina Mistry's cover of "Hot Hot Hot"
Chris Ledoux's cover of "Life Is a Highway"
Cleopatra & Hakim's cover of "Walk Like an Egyptian"
David Mead's cover of "Human Nature"
The Donnas' cover of "Dancing With Myself"
Elwood's cover/rewrite of "Sundown"
Harvey Danger's cover of "Save It For Later"
Jason Spooner's cover of "Wishing Well" (although that's a close call)
Jeffrey Gaines's cover of "In Your Eyes" (another close one)
Lou Barlowe's cover of "Round and Round"
The Miracles of Modern Science's cover of "Pumped Up Kicks"
Mojo Nixon's cover of "Girlfriend In a Coma"
The Monkees' cover of "Every Step Of the Way"
Moxy Fruvous's cover of "I've Gotta Get a Message To You"
Ozzy Osbourne & Coal Chamber's cover of "Shock the Monkey"
Patty Larkin's cover of "Have a Little Faith In Me"
The Polyphonic Spree's cover of "Lithium" (I'll probably take flak for that one)
Primus's cover of "Making Plans For Nigel"
Pseudo Echo's cover of "Funkytown"
REM's cover of "I Am Superman"
Seal's cover of "Fly Like an Eagle"
Suzy Bogguss's cover of "Lovin' a Hurricane"
Taj Mahal's cover of "Take a Giant Step"
Thea Gilmore's cover of "You Spin Me Right Round"
Too Much Joy's cover of "That's a Lie"
Voice of the Beehive's cover of "I Think I Love You"
Wassis Diop's cover of "Once In a Lifetime"
Not sure if Cry Cry Cry's version of "Cold Missouri Waters" counts as a cover or not.
I don't like it better than the original, exactly, but The Presidents of the Unites States of America's cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star" is a lot of fun. Ditto Soul Asylum's cover of "School's Out."
I'd list my favorite cover of "Devil's Right Hand" if I could figure out who the first version was. Steve Earle wrote it, but is Copperhead Road its first appearance? Anyway, Johnny Cash's and Webb Wilder's versions are both great.
I am the only person in the world who prefers the original Tears for Fears version of "Mad World" to the covers.
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
Patti Smith, "Because the Night." Arguable because her (IMNSHO improved) version hit the charts before Bruce's was released. Also her cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," largely because Smith can do the mood better than most, and the most obnoxiously overrated lyrics of "grunge" need to be done over banjo with an improvised beat-poetry spoken word bridge.
Although "I Drove All Night" was written for Orbison, Cyndi released it first in a version that reeks of sexual desire, gas station coffee, and cheez-its. Her version stands as one of the best love songs of the 80s, recorded when she was arguably at her best. Orbison's version suffers from overproduction and Orbison not being at his best.
Devo's "Satisfaction". Devo does cynicism and repressed sexuality much better than Mick Jagger.
I'm silly in love with Kiki and Herb's cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart."
Re: remixes/covers that are better than the original
Gypsy Kings; Hotel California
Santa Eslmerelda and The Animals did good things with a song written for Nina Simone.
Oldies:
Jolene by the White Stripes.
House of the Rising Sun by the Animals.
St. James Infirmary by Louis Armstrong.
Remixes:
Ballin the Jack remixed by DJ Yoda.
Que Sera remixed by Wax Tailor.
