How does it make less sense than the original mutations?
None of this makes any sense in terms of physics or genetics. "Mutant" in this context just means people with random superpowers, that is all.

This. The secondary mutations and the primary mutations are equally nonsensical. I suppose you could look at it as thus being nonsensical squared, or you could look at it as complete lack of sense + complete lack of sense = complete lack of sense.
