Isn't he like the one character that connects most of the films? Or I guess Fury was in the end bits after the credits of a lot of them. But still, he wasn't just written into Avengers as a "disposable character".

And I think you're also negating the power his death had. He was a really important factor in all of the movies and in Avengers specifically, tying all the characters together and motivating them to fight as a team. It could be argued that he, moreso than anyone else in the movies, is responsible for the creation of the Avengers. I think that's a bit more than just a disposable character.

He shows up in both Iron Man movies and Thor. He makes no appearance in Captain America, but his Captain America fanboying kinda makes up for that/creates that connection. The only movie that doesn't have him is the Incredible Hulk, but Coulson stars in the MCU short about the Incredible Hulk, and in it Coulson plots out how to get Bruce onto the Avengers instead of Blonsky, so he's kind of still in it, in a round-about way.

So yeah, he's the only real common denominator in all the movies. Fury and Tony are close seconds, as they each show up in three movies (they both appear in both Iron Man movies, then Fury appears in the end of Captain America, while Tony appears in the post-credits scene of the Incredible Hulk).
