I don't even get why people care about this character. Yeah, the thing with the Captain America cards was kinda funny, but for the most part, he was just a boring old man. Who cares?

I liked him and found him easier to relate to than any of the heroes. Also, his actor is funny and he connects most of the films. The end.

(I don't understand why people liking Coulson drives other people up the wall, personally. Stop hashing my squee, non-Coulson fans.)

intrigueing: (no hard feelings point break)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-01-03 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, actually, he was pretty popular ever since the first Iron Man movie came out in 2008, when he was just a random bit character and before anyone thought that he was going to become likable enough to effectively kill off in that manner.

Also, "manipulated like that"? Uh, sorry to burst your bubble, but ALL fiction is manipulative to some degree. It's the definition of fiction. They're fictional events told in a manner calculated to get a particular reaction out of the audience. Eliciting unintentional reactions different from what was intended is a sign of crappy storytelling.

So...yes? You're right? I mean, of course he was given more screentime so you'd feel worse when he died. Duh. That's pretty much a no-brainer. It's the whole point of fiction -- create characters you are familiar with and like so you feel it more when stuff happens to them rather than to Faceless Drone #12864. It would be pretty shitty storytelling if the writers gave him less screentime than before, then killed him, and then told you that you should feel bad for him.

I suppose there are more subtle ways to do it, but eh, it's a superhero movie full of OTT-ness and explosions and fight scenes and larger-than-life characters. Subtlety was probably not high on the producers' agenda ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
He may have been written to be unimportant, but my understanding is that he got a much bigger role in the MCU than was planned because Clark Gregg did such a good job.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Did you not watch the other Marvel movies? He wasn't just written into Avengers.

And honestly, aren't all movies just emotional manipulation? Sad, happy, excited, whatever. It's all written to make you feel something.

I assumed the reason people liked him was because of something from the comics that didn't make it into the movie, but I guess it was just fandom being fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't he like the one character that connects most of the films? Or I guess Fury was in the end bits after the credits of a lot of them. But still, he wasn't just written into Avengers as a "disposable character".

And I think you're also negating the power his death had. He was a really important factor in all of the movies and in Avengers specifically, tying all the characters together and motivating them to fight as a team. It could be argued that he, moreso than anyone else in the movies, is responsible for the creation of the Avengers. I think that's a bit more than just a disposable character.

Did you not see any of the movies leading up to The Avengers (the Iron Man movies, Thor, etc.)? Because I don't have a huge emotional investment in Coulson, but he was very obviously not "created to be a disposable character." He'd been in at least three previous movies and had formed relationships with other major characters in the setting. If you didn't see the movies where he previously appeared, that could be why you didn't get his significance in The Avengers.

I too hate it when a story attempts to make me feel emotionally involved.

I mean, Charlotte's just a spider. Who gives a fuck if she's shown as a really nice person through the book. STOP MANIPULATING AUTHOR. She's a fucking spider in a pig book. Nope. No feelings.

i have no strong feelings one way or the other ( http://youtu.be/CxK_nA2iVXw ) about this character, but i think the main reason he got as much screentime as he did was because he was the only connection between the protags.

He's not my favorite character. I prefer reading about the Avengers. BUT I like him and found his death pretty sad.

I'm more confused by the Darcy obsession, myself. I mean, I guess I liked her enough in Thor, but not in any grand way, though I see lots of Darcy/everyone fics. o.O

[personal profile] taotrooper 2013-01-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what everyone else said. And if he hadn't been given more screentime, we wouldn't have seen him interact with the Avengers he hadn't spoken to in the other movies (and the ones he already knew too, which was a nice continuity detail at least with Tony and Pepper.) And if he was a total stranger to the six main characters, then Fury's manipulation and their motivation to teamwork would've looked shallow as fuck. It was necessary for the plot to have those scenes on-camera.

For me, he was this nice guy who did a good job and was a fanboy of Captain America. I *identified* with him. He was, for lack of a better word, "everyman", IMO. He was the guy next door who had a really interesting job and got killed on it.

I was sad when he died because I'd enjoyed him in the other Marvel movies, but I enjoyed him as a slightly smug bureaucrat who almost always held the cards in a scene, so I didn't really like how he became a fanboy around Cap. Also, I'd already written scenes between Coulson and Cap where Coulson behaves like he does with Tony and Thor, all staid and clever and slightly smug, and I just prefer that so much more than the fanboy thing.

Yes, yes, I know I'm alone in this.

Honestly OP? I agree with you - at least as far as people making him out to be more important than he actually is.

Don't get me wrong, I liked him in all the movies- but it was pretty clear that he was being written to be killed off which means that his *death* was the entire point to him. To me that's being expendable, and there are routes they could have gone that wouldn't have involved him at all.

tl;dr: He was a likeable character, but he was made to be killed off, and he wasn't quite the ALL IMPORTANT character everyone makes him out to be.

I wasn't sad, but i was annoyed because I liked that he was a Captain America fanboy. He would have made great fodder for comedy. No I there's no one to really care about in SHIELD except for Nick Fury.
