Spoilers

I'm glad it didn't happen, and not just cause he's young, but here's why:

Because she's a kick-ass female character, without being all-powerful or without flaws. She's incredibly brave and determined for a girl her age, and I loved that they didn't need to have a romantic subplot that would have weakened the story.

Also I love, love, love that at the end of the film, she says that she never had kids and never married - not because she was undesirable - but because her life was full and she was too busy doing other things.

Hell yes. It's so great that Mattie just never marries, and it's basically presented, as, you know, that's completely okay.

Also, if you read the book, it's entirely clear that she is equally fierce, if not more fierce, as an adult and even in old age as she is when she's a kid. She's just one of the fiercest characters in literature and you have to love her for it.

(read the book, it's brilliant, seriously read it)

All of this is true but it doesn't stop me from shipping it.
Shipping =/= I wanted the story to turn out a different way, it's just a pairing I find interesting

I want to second the "omg read the book" comment. All the wonderful lines in the movie...well, where do you think they got them from? :D
