PS2:

I really love the Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry and God of War series. For RPGs I pretty much just played the Shin Megami Tensei (Nocturne is my favourite) and Persona (3 and 4) games. I bought Final Fantasy XII but never actually played it, lol.

PS3: Same series, though there is no MegaTen and the only Persona game is a fighting one (P4 Arena) and I have never played it. And I can't speak for any of the Final Fantasy XIII games.

Also, Mass Effect. The whole trilogy is available as a set now.
Assassin's Creed: The first is supposedly boring, but I love the games from ACII on.
If you're really into open world: Fallout? Skyrim? Though Fallout 3 is a tad buggy on PS3 and the Skyrim DLC isn't on PS3.. yet.
Other PS3 games I love are Demon's and Dark Souls, Call of Duty, the Uncharted series, Bayonetta and Catherine.
I've been meaning to get/play the Batman games (Arkham City and Arkham Asylum).
I'm sure there's a lot more but this comment is long enough, haha.

FFXII is pretty amazing, but the plot structure is a mess due to the producer ragequitting halfway through the development process. Gameplaywise, what you (mostly) do is program how characters behave in combat, which some people find really fun and other people find really dull. It's a great RPG for exploring and doing gigantic sidequests, and the world it's set in is well-realised...but...then you get those stretches where the plot takes a hike for over 10 hours while you wander from A to B and kill things. Also, the main character is completely inconsequential to the story because he was forced on the producer by management, and that is really annoying. Amazingly fun game, though. I literally played it so much I sprained an eye muscle, and because a) I was so damn hooked, and b) the whole point is that you train FFXII to play itself, I kept playing even though I couldn't see.

I adore FFXIII and think it's underrated, but, uh, a lot of people disagree with me. I read it as some vicious trolling of JRPGs as a genre - almost all the characters obviously exist just to debunk a certain JRPG stereotype, and the entire world is made of meta. Unfortunately the very early part of the game is a bit excruciating for me, because your characters don't start gaining XP for the first couple of hours (not until they learn to use magic) and the lack of advancement made the gameplay feel pointless. Similarly the combat system is too basic early on - it gets very complex, strategic and fun by the endgame but wow does it take a while to get there.

FFXIII-2 has refined away everything that was wrong with FFXIII's combat system but unfortunately it sucks in all other respects.
