Video games recs

[personal profile] rubbertea 2013-01-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I got my old PS2 back today and I'm getting a PS3 for my birthday, but I have almost no games left and I don't really know what to buy.

Could you guys recommend some great and easy to find games to me? (And is that sentence grammatically correct?)

Hiiii!

YES.

For PS2:
Jak & Daxter, the Precursor Legacy (if I'm not mistaken - it's the first game in the series)
Ratchet & Clank I, II, III
I'm pretty sure you can still find them online or in stores like Dock Games/Cash Express/Easy Cash etc...

Great adventure/platform games.

(ps: happy new year!)

Happy new year! I hope you had fun for the holidays <3

Looks like there's a Dock Games in Bordeaux, yay! I'll go take a look and see if they have these games.

Thanks!

I don't know what kind of games you like, but I absolutely LOVED Lego Batman for the PS2. ATV Off Road Fury 2 and Need for Speed were also two of my favorite PS2 games. I was a pretty easygoing player, so I liked games I could just turn on, play for a little bit and then come back to later.

I have only heard good things about the LEGO games, so I think I'll check the Batman one out, thanks.

I'm a pretty casual player too, and I like pretty much all kinds of games (except most sports and racing games, but that's because I'm terrible at them).

My top 3 favourite PS2 games, in order:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Silent Hill 2
The Warriors

MGS3 is in the HD collection on PS3, but I think I ultimately prefer the original. The HD version gets about a B-grade in quality.

For PS3 you absolutely MUST get the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD re-releases, and buy Journey off PSN!

Thanks for the recs!

I have some questions concerning PS3 games. Is it cheaper to buy the digital version? And if so, do all games get one?

The Warriors is really that good, huh? I saw it a couple of times and passed it up because I didn't know if it was any good and I don't like to take chances on games based on pre-existing movies, franchises etc (sometimes they're good but it's like a crapshoot)

Anyway now I regret it, I love that movie too

Okami, Only I'm not sure how easy it would be to find these days as I bought it ages ago. Still a great game if you can get it.

Definitely seconding Journey (it's on the PSN on the PS3), it's a great game. Also for the PS3 (although of course ymmv based on what you personally like): the Assassin's Creed series, the Uncharted series, Dragon Age: Origins, LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2, Skyrim, Infamous 1 & 2.
elaminator: (Assassin's Creed 3: Connor - how you doi)

+1 to Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age and Skyrim. I play AssCreed and Skyrim on 360 and Dragon Age on PC so those stupidly slipped my mind.
elaminator: (Uncharted: Nate/Elena)

I don't know what kind of games you like but...

Seconding the Metal Gear Solid series. Final Fantasy X (yes, I actually liked it; FFX-2 too, if you don't mind some silliness), Persona 3 FES (I never beat this...but I still like it enough to rec, so take that how you will), the Devil May Cry series, uh... and the Uncharted series. Infamous is good too!

For PS2, I like the Silent Hill and Kingdom Hearts series. I don't own a PS3, but I want one just so I can play Flower and Journey.

If you're happy to navigate PSN then Tokyo Jungle for the PS3 is pure addictive crack (I only just bought it and can't put it down, hence the recommend) Where else can you wander around Tokyo killing lions using a pack of bloodthirsty pomeranians?

http://youtu.be/3Fw3cJhKv5c

It's the silliest game I've ever played, but it's also ridiculously fun.

If you're into hack-and-slash at all, there's the Devil May Cry series for the PS2 (or you can get the PS3 ports of the first three games for cheap). And I really loved the Legacy of Kain series for adventure/exploration. If you're into RPGs, Mass Effect and Dragon Age series (for the PS3) are awesome. Portal 1&2 are great puzzle games (especially for casual players).

PS2: DMC 3, Onimusha Series... and NIER for PS3 \o/

Re: Video games recs

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
seconding Devil May Cry (don't get DMC 2, though). I hear Devil May Cry 3 is all right too, but it's harder

if you can find them, the first 3 Spyro The Dragon games for the first PlayStation are the bomb (Spyro The Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage [in the USA]/Gateway to Glimmer [in the EU] and Spyro: Year of the Dragon). don't bother with Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly; it's terrible. Spyro: A Hero's Tail is decent, but it doesn't even compare to the first three. I've heard the Legend of Spyro trilogy is okay too, but it's more focused on combat than on exploring

the first Kingdom Hearts game is a must as well. I would hesitate to recommend Kingdom Hearts II, as it lost the emphasis on exploration and upped the angst and the bishounen characters up to eleven (although the combat system is better in it, and it has a funner shooter minigame); also it lost its colorfulness in the palette :(

if RPGs are your thing, anything by Square Enix is at least of decent quality, for both the first PlayStation and the PS2; but you might want to go around scouring for reviews and such to see what suits your tastes better

I hear that the games (RPGs) published by ATLUS are usually good too, but I never see them in stores where I live, so vOv

Xenosaga is a cool RPG if you are into Science Fiction, but it was part of a six part series that got unexpectedly reduced into a trilogy, so I hear that the other two games suffered

PS2:

I really love the Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry and God of War series. For RPGs I pretty much just played the Shin Megami Tensei (Nocturne is my favourite) and Persona (3 and 4) games. I bought Final Fantasy XII but never actually played it, lol.

PS3: Same series, though there is no MegaTen and the only Persona game is a fighting one (P4 Arena) and I have never played it. And I can't speak for any of the Final Fantasy XIII games.

Also, Mass Effect. The whole trilogy is available as a set now.
Assassin's Creed: The first is supposedly boring, but I love the games from ACII on.
If you're really into open world: Fallout? Skyrim? Though Fallout 3 is a tad buggy on PS3 and the Skyrim DLC isn't on PS3.. yet.
Other PS3 games I love are Demon's and Dark Souls, Call of Duty, the Uncharted series, Bayonetta and Catherine.
I've been meaning to get/play the Batman games (Arkham City and Arkham Asylum).
I'm sure there's a lot more but this comment is long enough, haha.

FFXII is pretty amazing, but the plot structure is a mess due to the producer ragequitting halfway through the development process. Gameplaywise, what you (mostly) do is program how characters behave in combat, which some people find really fun and other people find really dull. It's a great RPG for exploring and doing gigantic sidequests, and the world it's set in is well-realised...but...then you get those stretches where the plot takes a hike for over 10 hours while you wander from A to B and kill things. Also, the main character is completely inconsequential to the story because he was forced on the producer by management, and that is really annoying. Amazingly fun game, though. I literally played it so much I sprained an eye muscle, and because a) I was so damn hooked, and b) the whole point is that you train FFXII to play itself, I kept playing even though I couldn't see.

I adore FFXIII and think it's underrated, but, uh, a lot of people disagree with me. I read it as some vicious trolling of JRPGs as a genre - almost all the characters obviously exist just to debunk a certain JRPG stereotype, and the entire world is made of meta. Unfortunately the very early part of the game is a bit excruciating for me, because your characters don't start gaining XP for the first couple of hours (not until they learn to use magic) and the lack of advancement made the gameplay feel pointless. Similarly the combat system is too basic early on - it gets very complex, strategic and fun by the endgame but wow does it take a while to get there.

FFXIII-2 has refined away everything that was wrong with FFXIII's combat system but unfortunately it sucks in all other respects.
