feline AIDS is killing me.

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-01-04 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
We have two cats, and they both have feline AIDS. They were diagnosed several years ago, and we were told then that they had about 6 months to live. Thankfully, that was wrong and we have had many years since to spend with them. One (Tiger) is still as fat and healthy as ever, but the other (Flash) is probably going to die very soon. He is losing weight and often gasps for air, unable to catch his breath for minutes at a time. He doesn't move much, and when he does it is slow and laborious, almost arthritic. I am terrified for him, and I don't know what to do. At times he seems happy, but at others it hurts me just to see how much pain he is in.

This cat and I grew up together. I am his mother and sister; he is my son and my brother, and I don't know what I will do when he is gone.

Basically, I can't handle this and I want to cry all the time. What do you do when there's nothing you CAN do?

These are my two cats. They are such bros. Tiger is grey/white, and Flash is orange.

I wish I could make you feel better Tygg or fix your cat, or tell you that it will be okay! But I always end up sounding like a greeting card, know this though: I do know that it will hurt to loose someone you love, but it will get better eventually.

If you want anyone to talk to about this or anything else you can always PM me, or skype me and so on.

Thank you, dearest. I'm mostly kind of stable about this, but lately I've been having like panic-attack-level episodes of anxiety, and I don't really have anyone in RL other than my parents to talk to, and they get sick of me worrying out loud. So mostly I just needed somewhere to get all my feelings out in the open.

*HUGE THANK YOU HUGS*

(sorry I've been so inactive lately, I've just been in one of those phases where I don't spend a lot of time online.)

I get it Hon, that is what we are here for! <3

(Don't worry, though I do wonder what you are up to when I don't see you for a couple of days*. I'm not really around much lately either, family and friends have been taking up my time during the Christmas holidays.)

*I might or might not be a creepy stalker, depending on your point of view...

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

My cat Seamus died of feline AIDS about a year ago exactly... after living about 8 or 9 years, but he was an outdoor cat and refused to stay indoors so that seems like a robust life for him. We couldn't afford the medicine to keep him alive and he was obviously in pain so my family just put him to sleep, right before I came down to visit so I didn't even get to say goodbye :(

I recently lost a cat that was so very very dear to me. I had her since I was a kid -- for 16 years -- and her death left me devastated.

I wish I could give you advice or make you feel better, but a loss of a friend, a companion, a family member is so hard. Days after her death all I did was cry and look at the spot where she past away.

It's been a few months since she has died, and although the pain is still there, I try to think that she is somewhere happier and is at peace. By the end she was blind and didn't even know where she was, so her passing was for the best (even though I still wish she was with me and wasn't gone).

All I can say is, be there for Flash as much as you can. He knows you love him. I was there for my cat when she died, and even though it was the hardest thing to witness, I know she was loved and looked after until the very end.

I don't know if what I said made anything better, but if you need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me. *Hugs*

It's hard to lose a kitty, even when you know it's coming. My ex's cat died at -- 23? 24? Not sure, somewhere in there. He was very old, and in degrading condition (although not in pain that we could tell), and we all knew it was coming, but... :-\

No matter how much time you have, it's never enough.

Are you able to take him to see a vet if he's in pain? My kitty is turning 10 this year and we were just able to get meds for her arthritis. (She was a feral kitten and broke her leg in two places, the vet confirmed. Nobody was able to catch her to take her to the vet, and it healed poorly.) I would think that given the situation, a vet would be able to do something to make things easier for the poor dear.
