Weird fic habits

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I really like writing about lesbians who are conflicted about their sexuality. Since I am neither a) a lesbian nor b) conflicted about my sexuality, this seems strange to me. Worse, getting this particular character trait usually requires genderbending, because I'm not in female-heavy/femslash heavy fandoms. So I genderbend male characters into conflicted lesbians. All the time.

F!S, what are those things you like that inexplicably keep showing up in your fic?

For some reason I love to write stories where the main character is haunted by a ghost, and it's left ambiguous whether or not said ghost is real -- or just a figment of the main character's fucked-up mind.

I love reading those stories. So keep writing them please!

(also other kinds of ghost stories) (i love ghost stories) (they're great)

The more I like a character, the more likely I am to write fic where they are subjected to horrible and humiliating things for the sake of comedy.

I think I might have a bit of an obsession with schadenfreude.

Male characters who are tortured juuuuust to the edge of death. I keep thinking I must being into the comfort or something, but, uh...all my WIPS stop as soon as they're not in danger of losing their life.

I like writing stories with friendships/relationships between human and non-human characters. Ghosts, monsters, mythical creatures... that sort of thing. I really like exploring the mythology behind a lot of those things, too, and finding ways to twist it while still staying true to source material. I also really like writing about kids.

And not really a plot point, but I also write a lot of fic that follows a non-linear timeline or skips between two stories/points in time.

Characters who run away, and keep running, never to be found.

Kind of?

I write up a nice ending where people are found/return home for the fic, then I write up the 'running' ending for me to read personally.

(It's actually kind of funny, I'm working specifically on a "comes home" fic right now, to try and break the streak. |D)

People who are terrible at relationships being in a relationship together (and being terrible at it). But they always really love each other, even when they fight.

I'm honestly so tired to writing people sniping at each other, though.

It's not weird exactly, but I seem to keep writing about flawed, hurt people with a lot of emotional baggage. I usually add even more baggage on top of canon.

I just keep writing about weird shit in weird ways. I have exactly one fic where the premise and the writing style are simple (two characters are getting married) and even then it's an unconventional pairing with unconventional themes and people. Also it's unfinished.

All of my other stories (published and unpublished) are crossovers, AU's, fusions, fics with bizarre/supernatural premises, crack, strange writing styles. . .yeah. I just don't seem to be capable of writing normal stuff. I have no clue why.

Some things I've noticed myself doing in my current fandom is subverting tropes, and finding ways to make less-than-fully-consensual scenarios more consensual.

At first, I though this said weird fic hobbits. Way too much Hobbit here today.

Weird fic habits? I tend to write really, really long conversations, which I edit down to one or two lines or take out completely before posting.

I've noticed I have a tendency to write fics where one character attempts suicide and is prevented from doing so by others.

I used to be suicidal myself, so yeah, this is definitely a bit of wish-fulfilment on my part...

I keep writing the same kink over and over but I only write in one fandom so... I've just been not posting them. I don't want to be that creepy fetishist author everyone knows about, but it's the only thing I'm interested in writing about!

I think my most ingrained shipping habit is Unavailable Undead Boyfriends. 'We can't be together any more because you're a zombie, BUT I STILL LOVE YOU', etc. I have bereavement issues okay. :/

Women: dominating, powerful, fashionable. Woman Kings and Witch Queens who rule ruthlessly.

Men who are sheltered and submissive but intelligent enough to weaponise that.

Dead children.

Insanity. Insanity for everyone.

I tend to default to writing about my OTPs or favs from another characters POV. I guess I like writing the 'validation' of somebody in-universe seeing how super they are.

Out of sync relationships. I have a terrible, terrible penchant to put characters in a one-sided relationship, angst, before finally moving on. Then said unrequited love finally realizes, only to not have their feelings reciprocated anymore, and creating one big depressing cycle of lost opportunities.

Also, time traveling in the same vein as The Time Traveler's Wife, because I eat that sort of bittersweet stuff with relish.

Well. I'm asexual but I read pretty much any and all porn. Dirty hot explicit porn. Lots of kink. Mostly slash and poly, but I'll read anything really.

1) Bizarre, fantastic/science-fictional forms of whump/angst. Like, possession, petrification, psychic torture, mind control, painful transformations, one character's had a premonition of another's death, timeline issues causing mismatched memories, etc. - all for the purpose of making a character hurt physically or emotionally (or both). I apparently can't write normal, possible whump where someone just gets beat up, or loves-me/loves-me-not angst, although to be fair I tend to write in fandoms where such fantasy shit is canonical.

2) A character who is a magus/wizard/witch, and either closeted or not practicing much because s/he knows it makes his/her friends uncomfortable. Often includes long, heartfelt conversations with the Science! character or an explicitly Christian character about how to resolve this. Partly, I keep writing this because I don't like how it keeps coming out, but partly I just like the trope.

3) Non-Kinsey-3 bisexuals, especially but not exclusively males.

I almost never write about the main characters in a work. It's always the minor characters, and it's always over some stupid detail that no one else cares about.

(For instance, right now, I'm working on a story about FedoraFreak from Homestuck. Some guy whose name we don't even know, and only had maybe ten lines talking to the Nannasprite during the Scratch intermission. But I find him weirdly fascinating and I want to write about his adventures.)

I keep writing fics (and it's crept into my original novel I'm writing as well) where two people start sleeping together for whatever reason, and only THEN become a couple/develop feelings for each other. Or only one person had romantic feelings (that they acknowledged at least) before they started sleeping together. Or something. So basically sex, then relationship. IDK why

People screwing up, whether it's their relationship or something else, because they are human and they have flaws. Things go sideways not because someone from the outside is fucking things up, but the situation is just made worse by the protagonists themselves. This is completely deliberate, though.

My actual weird fic habit is that I'm stuck at 13-19k words and I don't seem to be able to get out of the bracket. I've written a shitload of fics in the last six, seven months and they're all within this bracket. Most. Awkward. Length. Ever.
