Comedy Recs?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished up Arrested Development and I was wondering if anyone has any recs for any other comedies. I don't usually go in for sitcoms, but I've been feeling like picking some up lately. Other shows that I've watched and am a fan of include Community, The Office, Futurama, and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

I usually dislike comedy, but the one thing I seemed to quite like was a British series called Spaced.

nayrt

You dislike comedy? O.o

Do you mean you dislike comedies, or do you mean you actually dislike funny stuff and humor?

I mean I tend to dislike the genre on TV or in film.

I like humor, and enjoy stand-up comedy.

I'm curious - what makes you dislike the genre? (I can think of quite a few reasons, tbh...)

Parks and Recreation! It's a lot like The Office but totally different.

If you like Futurama, you might also like oldschool The Simpsons (seasons 2-9)

I've seen a few eps of Parks and Rec, but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I love old school Simpsons, though. :)

Parks and Rec takes a bit of time to pick up steam, but when it does it's really good.

I'd honestly suggest doing other things while watching Parks and Rec in the beginning if you're getting bored, you don't need to fully pay attention to get the gist and before you know it you'll be into it.

Depends, how old are you? I still think that WKRP in Cincinnati is the best comedy show ever, followed closely by Frasier.

I'm 31, and I've actually watched both of those shows and enjoyed them, haha. They used to play WKRP re-runs on one of the local station when I was a kid.

Parks & Recreation is always enjoyable and I also second the British show Spaced.

I know this one is an oldie, but I'm pretty fond of "Friends."

Edit: Also "Wilfred" is lovely.

sketch comedies are not a bad option; there's bound to be one skit that amuses you at least

personally, these guys cracked me up without fail

but I have no idea how easy it would be to find their material

I also find this guy funny

and if you're a fan of Harry Potter there is this

I'm not a really fan of TV/Hollywood comedy or sitcoms, but I rewatched 'Malcolm in the Middle' (hadn't seen it since I was a kid) a few months back and I found it to be really funny.

Also, 'IT Crowd' and 'Trailer Park Boys' are two of my favorite shows.

I like all the shows you've listed so I may be able to help.

Go On is my new favorite comedy of this season, it takes a few episodes to warm up but the writing is better then a lot of other current comedies and it has so far been avoiding a lot of tropes.

Happy Endings is a great one, stick with it until at least the second season, if you don't like it by then you may never like it.

Don't Trust the B is one I am becoming fond of, it definitely has it's own voice.

If you liked Arrested I'd suggest trying Running Wilde, it's by the same person, not everyone liked it but some of the humor is very similar and while I don't think it's anywhere near AD level, it's still good if you can look past it's fall backs.

Otherwise I'd say just look for more modern comedies that stay away from your typical sitcom formatting, I LOVE comedies but I hate most stereotypical sitcoms, so stay away from cbs and anything with a laugh track.

Have you seen the UK version of The Office? Spaced is good, lots of clever pop culture jokes. I love Peep Show, but the main characters are kind of relentlessly awful people.

If you like Arrested Development, you'll probably like Better off Ted.

Peep Show is very dark indeed, and not one to watch if you have a strong embarrassment squick, but it makes me laugh like nothing else on television.
