I can totally see it, though also in a non-sexual way. (I'm thinking of the book -- haven't seen the movie.)

I just watched the movie for the second time today (not on purpose) and I came out kinda shipping them, so I can see it...

Try telling the fandom they're not allowed to ship. No, really. I'll wait.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
the fandom is actually filled with shipping (probs because of the good looking actors vov?)

but, you know what, i can see this pairing

carry on

+1 to the "this fandom is full of ships". There were at least 5 secrets about them yesterday.

"I don't even think you're allowed to ship in The Hobbit."

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. *takes deep breath* Hahahahahahaha.

Okay, sorry, it's just...this is fandom.

(I hate this phrase because it's overdone, but I'm going to use it anyway because it's appropriate.) We do what we want!

And I can see Gandalf/Bilbo. He is overtly fond of Hobbits...

I concur with your laughter and would like to add my own LOL.

This was literally the comment I came down here to post except mine would have had more HAHAHAHAs and all in caps...

You do know there's a thriving Hobbit kinkmeme, right now: The Hobbit Kinkmeme.

I read this as "throbbing Hobbit kinkmeme"...

and it's a good one, too!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Not allowed to ship in The Hobbit? Do you think someone is going to come around and break your legs if you do?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
the fandom police knows where you live

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit. I better go flush my porn fic down the toilet.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, the fandom police are on your side.

They'll arrest those who'd rather discuss the story.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here, I mean from the book and not the movie, where I DON'T imagine "hot" actors in the roles.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not, they're hobbits. They just smack you in the knees a few times and ask you politely to stop.

How do you ship nonsexually?

Oh, right. That's called friendship LOL and I have never ever in any fandom heard of any wank or shipping wars centered around friendship--only around the doing it kind.

Which is to say: rock on with the Gandalf & Bilbo OR the Gandalf/Bilbo.

How do you ship nonsexually?

Uh... write or read or imagine a nonsexual romance between the characters? It wouldn't be that hard....

[personal profile] lunabee34 2013-01-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that the kind of thing a writer is likely to get dogpiled on for in *any* fandom, though, much less in The Hobbit, where the friendships between the characters is so foregrounded?

I've never seen anybody rag on anybody else for writing friendship fic.

No, probably not, although my fandom experience has apparently been rather calm so I'll leave the tales of horror to more qualified folks.

Also, shipping nonsexually wouldn't be a friendship fic. It would be a fic where two characters are in a romantic relationship that both of them have agreed, implicitly or explicitly, does not involve sex. There is a difference - romance doesn't have to mean sex, although it does for a lot of people.

Seriously? Lucky you. Mind you, there's frequently an additional undercurrent of "Reason #17354 Guy X shouldn't be paired with Girl Y: he's a bad friend to Guy Z", but that's mainly because most wanky fans in general are also rabid shippers.

Oh, that's unfortunate. I've only seen that kind of reaction to romantic ship fic. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-06 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure there are any fandoms where shipping isn't allowed? This secret is even funnier after yesterday's half a dozen Hobbit secrets, though.

What sort of Tolkien purist hole have you been in? Not allowed to ship? By who? I don't think Christopher Tolkien has ever said anything against fanfiction - his name has never turned up on any of those lists of authors that disapprove of it - so the one person who might have any sort of authority to tell people not to ship... hasn't.

Besides, put gorgeous guys in roles in the movies and shipping will happen.

However I have not yet seen Gandalf/Bilbo, I don't even recall him getting shipped with any of the hobbits in LotR. He mostly seems to get shipped with Galadriel.
