Okay, I am clearly the worst person on this thread - I once gave a minor pornfic for their birthday and I don't regret it. That was a few years ago, and we're still friends.

No one cards you if you go into a store and buy a book that has an explicit scene in it. I (accidentally) bought some explicit hentai in a store when I was 17, never mind text. Effectively no one gets 'carded' on the internet either - very few porn writers actually put their work somewhere where there's any level of age verifiction of the readership. I really don't need any hypocrisy about it; I wish I'd read more good porn when I was a teenager.

On a lot of sites there's something with explicit fic/art that you have to click "Proceed/Yes I am of age". There's actually usually something in the ToS about age restrictions on all major sites.

And while you didn't get carded, a lot of bookstores actually do card people for certain materials that are considered the same as porn - hentai being one of them. It's all in how it's registered and labeled.

The hentai I bought at Waterstones back in 2002 had an 18+ sticker on the back and neither I nor the checkout person noticed. It is definitely true that in general, bookstores do not card anyone for anything. I have never heard of them doing so, and it's certainly never happened to me. Certainly not full-length novels that contain one or two sex scenes, which is what a lot of porn in fandom equates to.

Asking someone to tick a box is not carding/verification. Verification would be when you have a moderated community that you only let people join & read if they state an over-18 age in their profile - which is at least equivalent to requiring false ID, if a little easier to get around. But almost no one even does that - instead, they post their porn in such a way to get the largest audience share possible, minors included.

I have been carded at a bookstore. I have also worked at a bookstore where we had to card for certain items.

North East USA, I was carded in '98, and worked in a bookstores off and on from 2000-2008 and always had to ask or card people for certain items. Generally if you ask their age the underage ones get all nervous and mumble a "nevermind" and flee, so actual carding didn't happen too often.

Right, thank you. I spent the years in which I was still getting carded in the UK and in the southern US, which imx is much more uptight about carding for alcohol than New England (which is where I live now). Maybe all the stereotypes about Northestern puritans are true!

Hear, hear. The stuff i wrote for my own personal amusement was very fucking NC-17/X when i was thirteen/fourteen/fifteen. I have a 'this is adult stuff' warning on my profile page on LJ and that's pretty much it.

I'm not the damn porn police, and there's *no way in hell* i can really know if someone is underage, a senior citizen, or an alien from Mars.
